75 today, which isn't too bad. About what I normally expect, really. Missed a bunch of greens, but not by much. I putted from off many of the greens, hence the good Up and Down numbers:

Front: 36, 11 putts, 2/7 FW, 3/9 GIR, 5/5 UD, 1/1 SS, 1 Birdie
Back: 39, 14 putts, 2/7 FW, 3/9 GIR, 3/5 UD, 1 OB, 1 Birdie
Total: 75, 25 putts, 4/14 FW, 6/18 GIR, 8/10 UD, 1/1 SS, 2 Birdies, 2 Penalty

I had a few quackers today. On the last hole, I quacked one left and was right behind a pine tree. Pin back, 163 to the back, hit a big sweeping 25-yard draw with a 3/4 7I to eight feet, lipped out the putt. Previous hole stuck one pin high with a full wedge, drew it off the front of the green. Putted it from the fringe for a 0-putt.

Man am I in a bad way right now. My game is just lame. Need a lesson and/or some practice. Big money game tomorrow with a group of 8 at a LONG tough course. Tomorrow could be expensive unless I pull my head out of my arse.

today I ignored a "total wash-out" forecast and I'm happy about it for two reasons:
1.it didn't rain until I was done with after-round lunch.
2.I shot season best 4 over round.
Even if 4 over doesn't sound too good - get a load of that : I was 5 over on two holes!
1 triple, 1 double, 3 bogey and 4 birdies. Driver and putter did the scoring. -2 on par 5's, +3 on par 3's... can't wait for my new, more forgiving irons scheduled to arrive this week

Sunday 5/1/05: another boring 75 (includes a penalty for striking the ball with my practice swing... man, was I mad !!!!!!!). Nothing exciting about this round, one double, 4 bogeys, 2 birdies. Really tough conditions, temp. about 46 with wind gusts up to 30 mph.

Interesting round yesterday. I shot 44 with poor chipping and putting. However, that was not the eventful part. We were walking up 12. 13 runns parallel to it. One of the guys in our group falls down. At first I thought he had tripped. Then I saw a ball bouncing past us. The guy on 13 pulled his drive and nailed our guy right on the top of his head. At first he didn't move and I started to go for my phone. After a second he popped up and was bleeding pretty badly. Fortunately he had some napkins in his bag and we got pressure on it. The poor guy who hit him was beside himself. It was a total accident and he yelled fore twice. He took our guy back to the clubhouse and they took care of him. The scalp bleeds a lot due to the high number of blood vessels there. He was fine and I saved my par after doing first aid. Six inches lower and it could have been a total disaster.

I've played more this year than in the past 5 and my swing is starting to come back. The one thing I hate about being a single is not knowing when you'll go out. I showed up at the course on Sunday, dropped my bag off, parked the car and when I got back, the starter said he was holding up a 3some on the first tee. Run in and pay. I didn't get loose and shot a 50 on the front. The 39 on the back made me feel so much better.

Reminds me of two old golf jokes:

A group of 3 players is getting off the 18th green. The starter notices, that they're arguing a lot. When asked how was the round one of them answers "horrible. My partner John had a stroke on 3rd hole and was taken to the hospital". Starter answers "sorry to hear that, that is really bad. Anyway - what's the argument all about?" The guy says "My oponents want me to put that stroke on the scorecard!" 3 players sitting in the clubhouse bar with sad faces. Bartender asks "what happend, did you have a bad round?" One guy says"yes, it was terrible. Harry had a heart attach on 6th hole and died!" Bartender "oh my goodness, that sure can ruin a round". Guy answers "I'm telling you, it was tough - hit a shot, drag Harry, hit a shot, drag Harry...."

The one thing I hate about being a single is not knowing when you'll go out.

Never happens on my home course. Yesterday was the perfect example. I arrive at the course at about 3:30 pm. The outting that had the course all day was in the clubhouse getting liquored up. Perfect!!!

I walked in and greeted the pro shop guys as usual. Here's the typical conversation between me and them... "Hey Steve, you playing today?" "Yes sir, how's it look out there?" "Course is wide open. Have fun." I grab a cart and my clubs and head to the first tee. Never see a single soul the entire 18. Out by 3:30, done by 6:00. Just another typical day on the golf course.

Unfortunately, I don't have a home course. In addition, I can't get out at 3:30. I'm basically forced to play on the weekends.

Well, in the past when I used to play on weekends I would always try and get out at twilight rates - usually around 3:00 or 4:00 on the weekends. Most of the time courses are less crowded at that time. Just keep looking around and keep playing different courses till you find one that is more "open" at that time on the weekends. Well, that is what I did anyway.

But I wouldn't go near my home course on the weekends. That's when they make their $$$, cause the place is packed on Saturday and Sundays. No way you'll catch me out there then.

Though my home course can be packed on the weekends, the pro shop always accomodates me and my buddies since we're regulars.

18 today there!

5/3/05, 3:10PM @Ballyowen (IMHO nicest public course in NJ), 74 with a sweet eagle on 17 (chipped-in from 10 ft off the green). Good ball striking day, 14 greens, 12 (out of 14) fairways, 31 putts - greens were aerated 2 weeks ago, still a bit rough.

My league started last night and my wife and I picked up where we left off last year. First place. She shot a 51 which is about average for her and I had a 38 (Par is 33). I struggled with my distances on a few partial wedges. I hit shots that in a month would have been close, but with the wet conditions right now were well short. Got my first birdie of the year. Finally on 8 I hit a perfect drive and an 80 yard wedge to 6 feet and rolled it in the center of the cup. I am loving my new Titleist driver. With the exception of one terrible shot, I was in the fairway between 270-305. I did save bogey on the last hole by punching out to 4 feet, left handed, from under a bush behind the green (distance control again). It was actually one of the best shots I have ever hit. I turned my 7 iron upside down and caught it clean. I probably couldn't drop a dozen balls there and do it again, but it proved to be the difference in the match. With handicaps, I beat my opponent by 1 shot and my wife beat his partner by 1 shot.

How about the 2ND eagle of the week! Had another today! 75 with demo irons and putter!

I won't stay far behind

78 from the tips at my home course (71.8 rating), including a double bogeyon the opening 330 (downhill!) hole (don't ask)... and - an eagle on 18. On a downhill approach from 175 I stuck 7i to about a foot... can't belive it didn't go in for a double-eagle. The best part of the round was, that I played a matchplay vs. my assistant Pro (scratch) and he was 2 up after 14. I went 4 under par on last 4 holes to pull it even ( birdie, par, birdie, eagle )... just to lose first playoff hole with a drive in someone's swimming pool Since it was my 4th round this week I expect to get fired soon and play even more golf!

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
