Myrtle Beach Course Recommendations

I am headed to Myrtle Beach for the first time ever in a couple of months.  I've tried to do a lot of research on which courses are the "must plays" for the area.  I thought I would get some input from you guys on my choices.  I have time to play 6 rounds that week.  Here are the ones I am leaning towards playing at the moment:

1) True Blue

2) Caledonia

3) TPC Myrtle Beach

4) The Dunes

5) Tidewater

6) Grande Dunes Resort

Let me know what you guys think.  Thanks in advance for the advice.

Tidewater and Heather Glenn are two of my all time favorites at MB.

I've heard Caledonia is very nice but I've never played it.

Driver: VRS 9.5 degrees

Fairway Wood: 13 degrees
Hybrid: A3 19 degrees

Irons: i20's  Yellow dot

Wedges: Vokey's 52, 56 & 60

Putter: 2 ball

Ball: Penta; ProV

This spring The Witch was our favorite course. A real sleeper. Don't be put off by the range. The course design and conditions were terrific. We played second tier courses like Kings North, Man' O War, Wild Wing...-- not Tidewater, Caledonia, True Blue and the like.

No need to change any of your choices. Cally, True Blue and the Dunes are the three must plays on the "Grand Strand". Your other three choices are not far behind. If you want to consider other options, the only other courses I'd consider would be the Dye, Love and Fazio courses at Barefoot Resort or Tigers Eye & Leopards Chase at Ocean Ridge Plantation. I've played more than 60 courses in MB and the only reason to consider others is if you want to save a few bucks. There are some high quality value courses such as the three Legends courses, Heritage, Oyster Bay and Rivers Edge, but if price is not a concern, you've made good selections.

Thanks for everyone's input. I really had no clue about any of the Myrtle Beach courses. A golf vacation service that I have used numerous times in the past for Hilton Head had recommended these courses. It sounds like you guys agree with his recommendations.

You have some of the best courses in MB on this list. personally i would replace Tidewater with Barefoot Fazio or Love or the members course at Grande Dunes - they are all better courses closer in my opinion. Tidewater is good it has 5 or 6 outstanding holes the rest are only ok but you will enjoy it. i just prefer some of the other courses more.

i think the grande Dunes resort course is better then the members course for what it is worth, don't know which you are planning on playing.

I am playing the resort course.  I have read several times that the resort course is better.

Tidewater was a late addition to my list.  I originally had International World Tour golf on my list, because I thought it would be unique and interesting to play.  I took it off because one set of 9's was going to be closed and it seems to have mixed reviews (most people love it or hate it).  The reservation guy thought Tidewater was a better choice so I switched it.

Even if I can't squeeze it in this trip, I'll probably play Barefoot Love/Fazio on my next trip there.  I have read good things about them.

Others I had considered were Glen Dornoch, Pawleys Plantation, Tigers Eye, The Witch/Wizard, and World Tour Golf .

I want to start out by saying that I have prayed and will continue to pray for those who are affected by the flooding in SC, the poor souls that are missing on the cargo ship, and the folks in the Bahamas that had the hurricane stalled over the islands for so long. I don't want to be insensitive at all because as important as golf is to me, it is nothing compared to the human suffering that has impacted so many.

With that being said, can anyone give me an idea of damage to the golf courses in the MB area especially up around Little River and the southern part of NC?

What about Heather Glen, Possom Trot, and Myrtle Wood? My wife and I have not been to the Grand Strand for 23 years! I like to walk and carry my clubs. NO carts for me!

Heather Glen is IMO an underrated course.  It's on the North end of the strand by the North Carolina border so can be a bit of a drive depending on where you are staying.  Myrtlewood is centrally located and a pretty good mid-tier course that is pretty forgiving. Possum Trot is in North Myrtle and probably one of the lower tiered courses in the area.  Not horrible but definitely better choices out there for your money.  As far as walking...probably not going to happen in Myrtle.  Honestly I don't know of any courses in the area that don't  require carts.  A lot of the layouts down there have set ups where the tee boxes are quite a good distance from the previous greens so walking is really not feasible.       Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.

      You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.

      Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!

      I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
