I was wondering if anyone has ever bagged an iron thats longer than a hybrid in their bag. I have a mess of long clubs and have been toying with different setups. Im thinking the following:

16* Hybrid XHot Pro (200 yards)

20* RBZ "4 iron" (190 yards)

23* Cobra S3 Max Hybrid (180 yards)

Yes the hybrids are both much easier to hit consistently off the turf but I like having the long iron for the tee. I guess I would be using it as mainly a driving iron and off the turf if I'm feeling confident.

I know the correct answer is to probably just get a 20* hybrid but my wifes getting pretty sick of golf club sized boxes showing up at our door. Anyone want to weigh in?

I had a similar set up once, two hybrids sandwiched by an iron.   They were there for different situations although in reality, the situations didn't come up too often.  IIRC, I carried 4i for shaping shots when I was conning myself I can do so reliably.   Anyway, try it and decide :-).

Never heard of doing it but stick with it if it works for you. The weird thing is your Cobra hybrid is almost .5" longer than your RBZ 4-iron. I'm also a little surprised you hit the Cobra hybrid 10 yards shorter than the 4 iron.

Well the 4 iron is 3 degrees stronger and I tend to be a high ball hitter so the hybrid might be losing some potential distance, while the 4 iron is a more piercing ball flight. This is also with a limited sample size.

Yeah the 10 yards would be a typical distance gap from a 20 degree iron to a 23 degree iron but your hybrid has a longer shaft, much lighter shaft, designed to get the ball in the air with a "hotter" face.

My longest iron is a 21 degrees and I just put in a new hybrid that is 20 degrees but the yardage gap is 15-20 yards.

It depends. Beside my Callaway irons, I also have a set of TM SLDRs.

When I hit shots off a tee, the SLDR 4i often carried farther than my Adams V4 4.H. But off the fairway, the V4 usually went farther. (V4 got traded in for a Cobra Fly.Z, so it's no longer around).

This kind of makes sense. That's why I would mainly keep it as a driving iron of sorts

I've heard guys discuss having an iron and hybrid of the same loft, like 23 degree 4 iron and 4 hybrid, in the bag at the same time, but I don't recall coming across this type of set up. At the end of the day, if that set up works for you, then it works.

Time for a "lumpy" I may say... My 4-iron is 21° my 4-hybrid is 23°... I think don't quote me, my 4h and 4i are pretty close in shaft length... I hit my 4-iron 195-200 (I learn how to hit my irons correctly, it might get scary), my 4h goes only 190, I just picked up the E8 irons, more or less for forgiveness...

So I know what you mean... Might be time for a "lumpy" in my bag (Lumpy=Driving Iron=Iron-like hybrid)...

I agree with Mike, "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it"... What's working for you, works for you...

Just a question, @PJCDude what is your next longest iron? (Can't see your sig I'm on mobile)

Ha, never knew about the "lumpy" nickname for a driving iron.

I've only ever heard it in Mark Crossfield's videos where Matt Lockey calls his Callaway driving iron a lumpy.

LOCKEY MAGIC!!! #LockeyOut

Back on topic though, if what you have in your bag, @PJCDude works, don't fix it, there is nothing wrong with it. (20° 4-iron) I haven't really looked at your handicap, but if your 2-hybrid, Power iron, 4-hybrid combo works don't fix it...

If you were in the market for a "lumpy", Mizuno T-Zoid Fli-Hi Driving Irons can be had cheaply, I think Apex UT are still $199... Like I said if it ain't broke dont fix it.

Yeah, if you're happy with your old Rinky Dink hybrid, you gotta keep running it out there as long as it works for you.

Rinkydink another Crossfield line... Gonna hit old Lumpy for safety... (It's on topic Mike and Erik)... Your Power iron is for tight par-four holes and long par-threes, correct, @PJCdude

Sorry @onthehunt526 it's been a few days.

i have old school AP1 irons starting at 5i which is 26 degrees and goes 170-175.

And yes the 20 degree iron is for long 3s and short 4s.

I put this setup into play late into the season and had good results but who knows what will come from winter tinkering at the heated range/simulator.

I am using a 4i with a graphite shaft temporarily to replace my hybrids because the swing weight is more compatible with the rest of my playing set. My hybrids go higher and farther than any 4i I have including my burner 4i.

The main reason I have it is because the graphite shaft gives me a higher flight than the CFS shaft on my Ping 4i. Otherwise, it's a pretty redundant club.

The plan is to get a nice ping i25/20 hybrid.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
