Dustin Johnson had just about the worst luck ever with this shot. The announcer even described it perfectly in one word: "Cruel."

Have you guys ever had any "cruel" levels of bad luck?

I did exactly the same thing a few years ago, a wedge off the flagstick and back into the water.  In another post I recently described a "perfect" high pitch that went straight to the bottom of the cup and bounced right back out.  On the other hand, yesterday I sank a 60-some foot putt from the back fringe for a birdie.  At that range, its pure luck when something goes in.  Good breaks and bad ones tend to even out after a while.  I think we just remember the bad ones longer.

I agree completely. I've had my share of good and bad. I've hit shots that catch the cart path and bounce OB and I've hit shots that should go OB and hit a tree and bounce back into the fairway instead.

I can't think of any bad bounces that weren't partly my own fault though. I really feel that you make your own luck out on the course for the most part.

2014 - Par 3 13th hole. Tee shot. Back tee placement. Typically I would overshoot the green with my 9i so I played a hard PW  to stop it dead. Instead of stopping, it landed pin high six feet right of the flag and backed up about 20 feet all the way into the front bunker.

This was finally balanced out this year when I pushed my 7 iron approach shot on the 9th hole into a tree on the right of the green and it ricocheted to dead center of the green.

Don't feel too bad for Dustin.

Likely feeling bad for Johnson, his fiancé Paulina Gretzky uploaded the picture below with the caption,”love you @djohnsonpga Dirty Diana ,” probably in an attempt to cheer him up. Based on the comments this elicited from DJ, it worked.

It get's juicier if your really interested in reading other tweets....

Do you ever think Wayne just wants to tell his daughter to class up a bit?  The comments on article are pretty funny like "I guess she forgot his email address"

Back in 1978, I got to play Pebble Beach. I got the "cruel fate" hole on No.8, the 430-yd Par 4 along the edge of the cliff.

A guy on a tractor was on the edge of what I thought was the landing area. So, I waited for him to move left, and lined up on the aiming stick for the fairway. I hit my best drive of the day, flying nice and high over the stick and heading toward the cliff.

I get in the cart and start down the fairway, and watch the mower guy pick up the stake and move it 15 yards left! I roll forward a bit more, and realize my alignment was bad - I had knocked the ball over the cliff.

Anyway, I end up with a 7 on the hole; could have had a shot at the green if I had been lined up right.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
    • Trackman place today. I broke my tripod so could only film by hand the video the venue’s cameras generated. This is an 8 iron. Amazing how odd this feels relative to how it looks. Not similar!
