Ok a little background. I have a hereditary condition where one of the medial tendons (stabalizes the patella) in my right knee is underdeveloped causing the "odd" dislocation every now and then. My GP advised to swing with less weight on the right leg in order to ave the knee. Now, i have been swinging in what i would call a conventionl manner with a 3/4 backswing but moved to a reverse k setup with no transfer back with good results and no knee pain, happy days!.

Recently a buddy of mine saw me practicing and said the swing was coming along nicely and it was remenicent of Rod Pampling. No idea who he was so thought i would  Google this Rodney Dumpling bloke. I liked what i saw until i noticed that he used the Gary Edwin Right sided swing, an "alternative" swing. This upset me a little as i was dead against going back to an alternative swing and i had the dilema as to stick or go back to the old swing.

I decided to stay with it as it works for me, but i also started thinking "is there such thing as a "conventional" swing these days?

Im sure most of us modify whatever swing we use to fit our needs, therefore making it alternative to the conventional even if in small ways yet there is still a stigma attached to alternative methods. Sure some of them are just money making schemes, but some such as Stack and Tilt have had success.

So, who is/was the the "conventional" swing model? If we are aying it is the golf pioneers that would mean some Scottish shepherd :-P

For Arguments sake, lets say it was David Leadbetter. All the people who were taught directly by big Dave could claim to have a conventional swing, bit would those who taught themselves his method using their own interpretations be boderline alternative?

Im starting to think the line between the conventional and the alternative is becoming a little blurred, anyone else thinking the same?

I don't believe there is a single conventional swing.  For every part of the swing, from grip to follow-through, there's a range of options that work reasonably well.  Even if you look at someone like Leadbetter, you'll find that the swing he taught 10 years ago is different from the A Swing that he's pushing today.  I'm not one to tout every view expressed by Erik and Mike, but this is where i give them lots of credit.  The 5 Simple Keys identify things that are consistently present in all, or nearly all, consistently successful swings.  If you can achieve those keys, you'll probably be pretty successful too.

Have you tried McConnell taping? I have the tape on both knees all the time. I have patella-femoral syndrome a.k.a. chondromalacia (osteo-arthritis under the knee cap). I just leave it on a change it every few days. I works by keeping the patella tracking in the right position. I swear by it. I use Leukotape right against the skin and don't use a bottom taple.

I think all the "infomercial" type swing methods are just overcorrections for common swing faults. (like many have already said regarding the A-swing) Find one that matches your issue and it seems like a godsend at first because it addresses your weakness. Hit that ceiling and then it's back to the drawing board.

I am of the opinion that any swing, with or without compensations, conventional, or other wise, that allows the club head to impact the ball correctly, is a good swing.

I think it changes every 10 years. I think the "conventional" golf swing is more of an idea than something a player out there demonstrates.

Thanks, i'll look into that. At the moment i wear a support everytime i play or practice. Physio helps when it gets bad. If i sit in the same position for 10 mins or more the knee cap "pops" out. You should see the faces of the people sat near me when i have to put it back in its place! :-D
