If I'm playing and I see Titleists, Callaways in certain places on the course in the woods, like where I hit mine, I know they're lost, and they'll go in my shag bag. Or if I find one in tall rough while I'm looking for mine. I usually play in off hours, so chances of finding like 4 balls over there that are in play by someone are rare. I'll leave the Pinnacles, Top Rocks, and Noodles on the ground.

In my opinion, going out with the express purpose of finding golf balls is like stealing.   It's not your property, it's not your ball.  Don't do it, and especially don't do it while people are playing on the course.

Now, if you're playing, and you just happen to find a ball, fine.

This isn't necessarily true.  There are often areas along the edges of golf courses where players regularly lose balls.  Those balls are abandoned and as far as I'm concerned, finders-keepers.  Just don't hold anyone up if you are searching while playing, and if searching just to find balls, do so during off peak times so that you don't slow down those who are playing.

More balls on the right.  Better balls on the left.

+10 000

you have time while playing to search for balls while partners play nevertheless you probably won't be in your game much.

I find many balls when I play bad and search for mine. (golf rule number one : I find 8-10 balls each time but not mine :-() otherwise I never look. stock is so high I send many on the range (cheap distance balls and proviwan type pro balls  too hard to play for my HCP). I keep the nxt type and such.

I usually play during early morning and late afternoon by myself where fewer golfers are out playing. It seems when I got out in the early morn and the first one on the course, I'll find a number of balls left on the fairway and around the edges of the rough from the night before. There is a rough near the creek on 18 that everybody hits into. One short walk of 15 feet will yield a quick dozen balls. Of course, I would never slow down play for looking for balls.... Even my own. Since I play by myself, if I don't see the ball right away, I'll drop one and move on, since I'm not in a match or anything.

:-D ... and keep your eyes open and down.

My advice - look for balls around red tee.   A few guys are too embarrassed to walk up to red tee to pick up/hit his 2nd ball.   I find a surprising number of balls around red tee while waiting for my wife to tee off.

I have never found any balls around or near the red tees. I guess the golfers in my area drive better than that.

Sometimes I play a par 3 course early in the morning, that is open during the night hours, and golfers play under the lights. Unless the golfers hit their ball in the lighted areas, it is damn near impossible to find your ball at night in the unlighted areas. So when I am the first one to tee off in the morning the golf ball pickin's are pretty good.
