There's no horseshoe rule in golf. Your ball needs to be replaced.

No horse-shoe rule?
You mean when I am close to the hole it doesnt count as in the cup?
When I simply hit the green it doesnt count as in the cup?
Who wrote these rules anyway?

Let me go sideways on this post -- still about hitting another ball on the green.

Lately I've been noticing PGA players leaving their ball on the green, lying somewhat near the hole, when another player chips on, instead of marking to get the ball out of the way of the second player. What's going on there?

There is no rule that says you have to mark before another player chips.  If the ball was clearly interfering or assisting the other player then it might be different, but just because a ball happens to be only 5 or 6 feet from the hole, that doesn't make it necessary to mark and lift.

I was going to link to a thread we had about this. It's sort of a "scratch my back I'll scratch yours" type of thing. It's not entirely cool as they are supposed to move their ball if they think it may assist the other player, but… they often don't, as you noticed.

From the tee that would be unreasonable, of course. The odds of it assisting are tiny, because the odds of them hitting are tiny.

I've started trying to play by this "rule" lately.  If I hit a ball that is not in the way of the next guy - meaning that from his direction it's close to being hole high or beyond - I won't rush to mark it.  I'll just kinda walk towards the green and if he looks like he's started his routine, I'll leave it alone, but if he looks like he's waiting for me - or, obviously, if he flat out asks me to mark - then I'll go mark it.

I think I just did this today.

Before you pass judgement, both balls were buried in 4" rough. So, here's the "story". Someone asked me if I was shooting a Callaway 3, and I said yes and told him that there is a Callaway where I was standing which I though was my ball. So, I used the ball he was standing next to. Next shot, I buried the ball into the bunker, and chipped to a few feet for a sand save. When I pulled the ball out of the hole, I noticed a logo on it that wasn't on my cheap "found it in the lake" ball. So, I'm pretty much not counting my score to GHIN because of this. So, in the end, I was right that the ball I was standing next to was mine. I also wondered how I got that extra 10 yard kick in that deep rough? He was insistent once I answered anything resembling "maybe" or yes. . . :-P

I think he was hoping I would say "yes", because in retrospect, I think his ball would have been behind a tree going backwards on the next hole.

Yeah, I just read the actual topic. I was going by the title, and I even misread that.

Sorry @Lihu, but this has to rank as one of best exchanges I've read on this forum.

Sounds like something I'd do. There have been more than a couple times when I'd start to reply to a post only to discover I'd read or interpreted the meaning completely wrong.
