So I broached the subject of watching the USO sectional at Canoe Brook (Summit, NJ), June 6, to @billchao. Wondering if anyone else is interested in popping in and watching for a little bit. It's a weekday, so you'll have to burn a vacation day, but it's free, and no one is there and it's the US Open.

Cool idea!  I'm too far, but I see that there's a section near me in Rockville, MD on the same day.  I might just go check it out.

I like that there's basically no one there and you sort of get the experience kind of unfiltered. It's worth trying once to see if you like it.

Ugh, a Monday?

There's like zero chance I can get off on a Monday in June, otherwise, I would have strongly considered it.

Have fun!

I recommend going to anyone who is even a little interested. Great way to see a good golf course and some high level (and high-stress-level) play!

Yup. And some cool friggin' ball flights. Seeing pro level trajectories hasn't gotten old for me yet. I saw Luke List last time and the guy just f**king air mails it. So high and so long his drivers are. You don't have to jockey for position, go wherever you want to make sure you can track the ball. And it's interesting seeing stuff like how they deal with a bad drive. 210 to front, 30 yards uphill. Also, every course you play afterwards seems like a sh*thole. :-(

Great idea, Steven!  I went and checked and the nearest one to me, unfortunately, is Lake Merced in San Francisco.  Maybe next year.

Tried to look up local qualifying sites and see if there are any recognizable names in the fields but can't seem to find any rosters except for the guys that advanced through qualifiers already contested.

Yeah, usually they hand out the tee time sheet when you get there. And there's also a Golf Channel studio/broadcasting truck there - I got to hear some interesting conversation between one of the reporters and his camera guys, forgot his name.

You see some things you don't ordinarily see. A player shank a wedge from 90 yards with a perfect lie from the middle of the fairway. A player rushing his practice at the range, and cold top one of his swings. Lots of Division 1 players, pros you haven't heard of for awhile.

Usually family and friends are following, but obviously, there are die hard golf fans there as well.

When I was a kid, I went to the US Open, the tennis version, a week before it started. You got to see a lot of great players practice, do trick shots, do fantastic feats of coordination you don't normally see on TV. My friend saw Steffi Graf play McEnroe, not practice, a friendly set or a couple of games. The qualifying is kind of like this.
