Plenty of reasons why tennis players do it:

1) Engaged core muscles allow you to hit harder.

2) Grunting relieves tension (it is true!).

3) Discombobulates opponents reflexes a bit. in effect they have less reaction time.

4) Psychologically intimidating (a very small factor).

In golf? IDK, maybe hit harder. Not sure there is a measurable benefit. But I do let out a throaty "AARRGHH" every now and then after (not during) a particularly unpleasant shot. I get over it faster.. I think.
