Hi all,

Been out of the golfing scene for a couple years (wife in grad school means we have no money)... Currently I have old hand me down graphite irons, not sure what brand but they aren't good.

I want to upgrade to some newer Callaway/Taylor Made/Cobra or whatever I can get a good deal on while maintaining quality.

I'm going to buy used because I do have a budget and I want to replace all of my clubs, so I'm hoping my irons can stay under $250 if possible. Looking on eBay and Craigslist.

i found a guy on Craigslist selling his Callaway X20 iron set with a lob and approach for $200 w/ a bag. Without the bag I got him down to $130 for all the clubs. I know these are 8-9 years old (maybe more?) so I'm curious if innovation and updates to clubs are too far beyond these.

At the moment, my thought is for $130, it's worth it just to buy them and see how I like them for a few months. If I don't, I should be able to sell and get my money back.

Is this a good price?

Are the x20's too old at this point?

Anyone have opinions on the x20s? I see mixed stuff online, but my assumption is it's Callaway and it'll be light years better than my trash I have now. Mostly I want very forgiving irons that are easy to hit. I'm not exactly a pro :)

thanks in advance!

130 is a good price if they are still in good shape. It is all about the condition.

Assuming the clubs are in good shape, the clubs will be worth it.  No doubt some of the latest clubs do have better technology but in value for money terms it is not worth it.  Plus, you can definitely use the set for a couple of years and then save up to buy a better set.  I currently use a set of Taylor Made RAC irons, which are not bad.  Yes, using my friends clubs occasionally I can get a bit more distance and accuracy, but the difference is small, not chalk and cheese.

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Tour 900 golf ball

I agree. Thats a good price as long as theyre in good shape. X-20's are great clubs imho and the difference between those and the latest set of  Callaways is probably very minute as others have mentioned. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Clubs are in good shape. No major dings or dents or anything. The others I am looking at are Mizuno 800 JPX HD for $250 (4-5 hybrid, 6-P & Gap).

I'm leaning towards the Mizuno's because of all that I've read on Golf Digest about their performance and they're obviously much newer. They have only been used 5 rounds and are mint condition.

Thoughts?

Its really more of a preference thing. I was considerring both sets about three years ago so Ive hit both quite a bit. I love anything mizuno with the exceptions of the hds. I just couldnt get along with them. Clubhead felt too heavy and they looked like a shovel at address. The x-20's to this day are one of my favorite sets of irons. If it wernt for the set I have now, Id still be really crushed that I missed out on the x-20's. Just my .02, yrmv

If theres a dicks sporting goods near you, you owe it to yourself to check these out. Dont let the Wilson name fool you, these are excellent sticks and for 150 a great deal. I had this set prior to the speedblade hls I have now and these are great little irons. Only reason I switched is cus I wanted a little less offset in my irons. If theres a dsg near u, u can even try before buy. http://m.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=60381976&appliedFilters=Price+Low+to+High&page=1&cp=4406646.4413989.4414118&categoryId=4414156

One good thing about the X20 model: The stock steel shaft was a mid-launch Uniflex that weighed about 106 grams - lively but not feathery. Some competing models (original Big Berthas and Ping G10s) had high-launch shafts that tended to balloon on the short irons.

If you have average swingspeed, I think you'll like them for your return seasons.

(Note: You'll probably need a more recent SW - the X20 SWs are very rare).

Check the shafts on both sets. If the X-20's have the cheaper uniflex type shafts like @WUTiger mentioned, they are a lot less desirable than if they have a tried and true shaft option like True Temper Dynamic Golds.

This set has SW-PW-5 and a Wilson approach that he added ok to the set. So it's a nice full set. I hit the x20's at Golfsmith today and they felt really nice. The x2 hots felt lighter and amazing  but honestly I don't think it was a world of difference for me. Which to me says I should go with this cheaper option because they seemed to hit and feel beautiful.

I'm asking about shafts now.

Uniflex was marketed as a general-purpose shaft - flex between R and S. The designers claimed it would fit about 65% of male golfers. Reality: It's an OK shaft, but not the ideal shaft for that many golfers.

Some golfers like the Uniflex, others do not. Here's a prior discussion:

    • I imagine there might be a fine, that's what the PGA Tour does for bad behavior.  Not sure if the USGA has any kind of Code of Conduct that would address this.
    • I've used this for planning, good information about courses, regions, transport, and lodging. Amazon.com  I prefer to stay in B&Bs, and have enjoyed playing many non-famous courses.  Hiring a car for many weeks is likely to be pretty expensive, but train travel is possible between regions.  I don't know about taxis for getting to courses, but that might be cheaper than hiring a car.  I certainly recommend staying in St Andrews for a while, there are 6 courses within the St Andrews Trust, and a shuttle will take you from one to the other, not including the Castle Course.  Beyond that, there are a dozen or more good courses within an hours drive, including Carnoustie and Kingsbarns and a bunch of lesser-known but fabulous courses.   Good luck, Scotland is a fabulous place!
    • I am looking to do a solo trip to Scotland, maybe 3 to 4 weeks, not golf every day but see some of the country in between. Looking more for convenience of travel to courses  than any particular courses. Any help on  best location, courses, accommodations appreciated.
