We have a group of 15-20 players each week and we play a skins game at 50% handicap. it spreads the wins out fairly equally over the course of the year amongst all players of varying handicaps. Some want to play the Stableford or Modified Stableford game . Has anyone deviated from the standard points system with any success?   Thanks much

I use the following for my game.

$10 for gross skins

$10 for stableford

Double-0

Bogey-1

Par-2

Birdie-4

It usually evens out for everyone, though I think the guys that only need 10-15 points have an advantage but the guys who need 30+ points usually make more birdie skins.

My group has played some sort of Stableford in past. I looked on different websites, and I'm confused on what is Stableford and what is Modified Stableford.

We played teams, and individual players could score points for their team on each hole. Individual HDCP strokes are involved for scoring, although max strokes allowed for a player is 21.

Our version had no penalty points for high scores. Points awarded for net hole scores were:

  • Bogie = +1
  • Par = +2
  • Birdie = +3
  • Eagle = +4
  • Albatross = +5

Other times, we count the two best balls (adjusted for player's HDCP) for each team for every hole. In this one, the lowest total score wins.

At the risk of sounding stupid, what does 80% of HCP mean....you only take your stroke benefit on 80% of the holes you would normally be credited? So if I'm a 13, I'd take my stroke off the top 10 HCP holes?

No.  You multiply your index by 80%, then convert that to course handicap as usual.

Thanks. My course keeps my GHIN for me, but I've never played in a competitive tourn where I actually APPLIED my HCP before. I think my understanding of how to apply my handicap to a course is off.  As above, my HCP is a 13.3 x.8 = 10.64. I was under the impression to apply that, I then took a stroke off the top 10 Handicapped holes.

Sometimes the 80% is taken off after you figure out what your course handicap is.

Let's assume that 13.3 and 10.6 are correct. That's still your handicap index.

To get your course handicap you multiply it by the slope/113.

So if your tees have a slope of 134, 10.6 * 134/113 = 12.6, which rounds up to 13, so you'd get 13 strokes on the course. With your original 13.3 handicap index, you'd have a 16 course handicap.

In our competitions we take  each handicap and give either 50%  or 80% one shandicap and one gets strokes where they fall on those particular holes. Seems to equal the playing field rather than getting full handicap.  Did some research and this seems to be a common practise. Of course whatever system is used there is always complaining of fairness .....it all depends on what side of the fence one is on....either a low mid or high handicap. Always sandbaggers out there
