Figured we have enough techies around here that you might be able to help me.

Just bought a new computer and a headset that uses a Usb connector.  My problem is that at work we use a Cisco IP and it has a 2.5 mm jack.  Do you guys think a usb 2.5 mm adapter would work?  Would it power the headset?

the headset is:  Dell Branded Headset UC300

I know maybe I haven't given enough information, but I'm hoping this starts the converation.

I'm doubting it but just a hunch. I posted your question on Amazon's page here.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Hey, thank you.

Someone responded and basically said try it out and let us know LoL.

I bought a new Dell computer but I couldn't get my old USB Logitech headset to work with it. Dell said the Dell headsets always work on the Dell computers so I bought one to try it. It worked. That is the extent of my headset knowledge. Why don't you try the experiment. Buy the adapter, plug it in and see if it works. Then you will be the expert on similar headset questions.

If I wasn't in KSA I would.  I dont have the luxury of trying things out as my vacation at the states ends in a few weeks.

I was able to get more info though, the phone is: CISCO SPA504G

Headsets that use 2.5mm jacks are analog devices.  Headsets that use USB plugs are digital so I doubt it will work because USB headsets have a DAC (Digital - Analog Converter) built into them, they accept digital data and convert it to analog.

I've seen devices that allow you to use analog headsets in PC's that don't have 2.5mm jacks but I've never seen the reverse.

That makes sense to me now, but why would there be a usb 2.5 mm adapter?  It would stand to reason that it would be an exercise in futility to even have it in existence wouldn't it?

Something like this -

But I haven't seen many and I'm not even sure the above would do anything..

My follow up question would be would you recommend I get a 3.5 mm head set and get a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm converter for the phone for when I want to use it in the office?  (The computer has a 3.5 mm jack)

It's possible that it works but I'm skeptical.  It would need an analog to digital converter built into it and I don't know where the power would come from to power the ADC chip.

The difference between a 2.5mm and 3.5mm jack is the 2.5mm is usually monaural and 3.5mm jack is stereo.  If you need 2.5mm jack for phone, I'd get the 3.5mm headset and adapter for 2.5mm, just understand sound will only be heard out of one speaker when using the phone.

The 2.5 and 3.5 jacks seem like obsolete tech so I would suggest trying to avoid them entirely if possible.  I think USB and mini-USB will be around for quite some time though.

Except that many small devices like his phone doesn't support USB.  If you want to look at the future, consider Bluetooth.

Ugh, Bluetooth. I didn't say it but I think their perpetual slogan is "It'll be better next year."

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan either but that's what seems to be the replacement for the 2.5mm / 3.5mm jacks and even USB for audio devices.
