I so want to see a coral snake. They are freakin cool. They say you "could" handle one with relative confidence it won't mess you up but still not worth the risk for every day people like me/us. I guess it's a snake that knows it's the baddest in the land so doesn't always have to prove it. Crazy as it sounds but if a professional snake handler (with anti venom) had one and said I could hold it, I probably would.

We used to spend a lot of time in Oak Creek Canyon when I was young (between Flagstaff and Sedona Az) and my mom told me of a few instances fishing at dusk where they would come out and be active and even had one slither by her foot.

When I was about 13 and living down in your neck of the woods (St. Pete) I was sitting on a creek bank alongside a bridge. A coral snake came out of a crack in the concrete like 2ft next to me at head level. He just kind of looked at me for a few seconds and retreated back into the crack. Was very cool to be that close to one.

We were always catching snakes as kids. Been bit plenty of times out of stupidity, but never from anything venomous.

Back on topic, that's one more thing to like about golf, you definitely see your share of wildlife.

How about, "If I see it slither, I will be going hither." ;-)

Mojave Greens are the bad ones out here. A close second are the Sidewinders. The Greens pack a highly potent venom. The Sidewinders will continue biting just for spite.

My favorite snake to run into are the Bullsnakes that are in abundance out here. They eat Rattlers, and Sidewinders. Park rangers have relocated 3 rattlers that wandered into people's campsites so far this season, and I have seen 5 more myself. Three of those were on a golf course. They are active at night, as is their natural prey.

Yup. I used the other rhyme to learn it.  Red to black: venom lack, red to yellow: kill a fellow.

Yeah Mojave greens are mean mofos, unique venom cocktail other NA pit vipers don't have. My old BIL (RIP-not because of snake bites) was a huge snake guy as well. They would go out there by cold creek near the jail at night and catch all the snakes coming onto the blacktop a to warm themselves. He did something illegal one time. He found an injured Mojave green, brought it home, nurses it back and re-released it.

@JonMA1. Very cool, I'm jealous.

Funny enough, living most of my life in NJ where there are no coral snakes, I'm not entirely sure where I learned it from, but I learned it as a kid. Bill Nye the Science Guy maybe.
