I don't understand that kind of thing. I don't understand this thread.

Scratch has a definition. The most variance is a stroke or half a stroke, but basically… if you're 0.4 to +0.4, roughly, you're a scratch golfer.

No other definition really makes sense.

^^^^^^^^^^ scratch has a definition - there is no, "to me it means..." As Erik stated, it's math...it's not up to interpretation.

It's a definition that only people who are interested in really being knowledgeable about golf know though. Most people don't understand that there is a difference between Par for the course and the course rating. For those people, someone who scores 72 on a par 72 course rated 69/113 is a scratch golfer because they shot par.

I understand what you're saying; a few years ago I was one of those very people ...but, respectfully, they would be wrong.

Oh, I don't disagree that they are wrong, but it is easy to understand why people would have differing ideas of what constitutes a scratch golfer. For the most part, it's not worth correcting them because then you have to explain course ratings and slope to them. Really, though, it's not all that important in the long run since most people who play will never even know anyone who's a legitimate scratch golfer.

For me a Scratch player is the one who averages around 3 over the average rating of the courses he played, that will lead in average to a 0 index.

In my case for example the course average rating of my last 20 rounds is 71,2. My average score is 76,15 so my average score related to course rating is 4,95 over. The average of my best 10 differential is 1,94.

1,94 * 0,96 = 1,824 -> 1,8 Index (In Argentina we have a different system, my handicap is 2)

I´m 1,8 index strokes from been a scratch. So if i lower my average score related to rating from 4,95 to 3 i´m certain I´ll be around 0 index and be a scratch player.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
