  1. 1. Should the long putter be banned

    • Yes, Golf is a game of tradition.

    • No, what for?

No. I've not seen any advantage to a person using one. Next they would want you to only be able to putt with a heel shafted blade putter.

I would vote for removing a group of golfers that are on the course more than 41/2 hours. including the pros.

Who cares what its made of! The fact is its basically a fixed point, it doesn't take nearly as much skill to be a good putter with a long putter.

If that's so why aren't any "good" putters using it. That argument is a crock. The best putters in the world all use standard length putters. Tiger Woods, Jim furyk, etc. The long putter is used as a crutch by players who have serious putting "issues". If it was easier to use everyone would be using it!

Yes, Yes, and Yes. But not just for tradition. Modern clubs are not made of iron or wood any more. But, they "look" like clubs (well maybe NOT those square things), but for the most part, "Old Tom" would recognize a driver, a fairway "metal", and even an "iron" from today, he may not know what to do with a long putter. I tried a long putter and I hated it, it feels goofy, and looks worse! That's MY story, and I'm sticking to it.....

Yes, I hate the looks of the dang things. At the USBO in Milwaukee probably 30-40% were using them. This tells me they're easier to use then a regular putter and it's an advantage. They banned Snead's short putter, why not these things?

Yes. It makes the putting stroke almost perfect, and hands almost don't come into play at all, and I thought this game was all about hands. You should have to use your hands!

Exactly right! They should not be outlawed. Some people prefer them, some don't. It would be as ridiculous to outlaw hybrids.

I am sorry but I am calling bull

to that stat. No way did 40-52 players(thats 30%-40% of the field) show up using broomsticks. You're . And even if that stat was true, which it isn't, that tournament was played opposite of the British Open so all the best players in the world were playing over there. Which proves my point, no really good putters use the long putter. If they were really good putters they would have spent that week in the UK.

Have you ever used a long putter. You're

too. Again if the long putter was sooooo simple and easy to use, and produced such a perfect hands free stroke, then why don't the best putters in the world use one? Why don't we see Tiger with the 48" mallet? Because they give no advantage what-so-ever to a good putter. NONE! At best they help bad putters regain some of their dignity back. If you want to ban long putters then please find a valid reason. Otherwise And while you're banning them make sure you ban those game improvement irons you're using because they make it easier for less skilled ball strikers to hit the ball. Oh and also those closed face 460cc drivers because they do the same. And don't forget to include mallet putters like the two-ball because they make it easier to line up a putt. In fact lets just all go back to musclebacks and persimmon. Those modern clubs just make this game too damn easy!

If only we could! I would love the game to be back to the way it was back in the early 1900's, Persimmons woods, and gutta percha balls. Life would be great!!!

This tells me that even if your 30-40% is correct that 60-70% were using standard length putters. That must make standard length easier to use :)

No way! If we are going to let people use huge headed square drivers and shovel looking irons (no offence to anyone using these) why can't people use a long putter?

The long putter gives a distinct advantage to those using it because it acts like an anchor which produces the pendulum effect necessary for the stroke. Golf isa not croquet. The USGA needs to create a new rule outlawing the long putter and enforce the rule.

Again, like I have asked all the other nimwits

with this argument..... If its such an advantage then why doesn't everyone use one? Why does Tiger Woods with access to any golf club he could ever want, still use that standard length putter? You say its such an advantage, has Tiger and 90% of other tour pros just not heard of this new "putter" technology. The long putter, golfs best kept secret????

When I was a little girl, I used what was a standard length putter that belonged to my uncle. Since I was so small, the putter was long in relation to my size (like a long handled putter). I could make every putt I looked at. It was like magic! When I grew up and became a man I couldn't make a long putter work anymore. I guess long putters are for little girls ------and maybe----- old people.

old people ...I hope to be one in the future. If the long putter allows me and my aching back to continue playing golf (and competing in club tourney's) in my golden years, then let me play it. Like NM keeps reminding you all...nobody is getting an advantage by using one. For now, I'll take my 35 inch Odessey 2-Ball putter and be on my way.

    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
    • Tiger on the Today show today. At 3:25 he says he's working on keeping his arms in more and rotating his hips better. Nice.
    • Day 11- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
