Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for October, 2016! The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a somewhat detailed post describing your practice every day during the month.
  • No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions.
  • On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it, preferably in red text or something so I can notice it and give you the award.
  • Detail what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.).

Enjoy and practice hard!

Massively failed at this last month, so going to try much harder this month!

Day 1: Played 9 holes, on a course that I happened to be driving past.  Wasn't scoring - just trying to play shots in real life, with real conditions.  Played some really pretty good shots, and only had two poor holes.  Wasn't focussed on anything in particular.

Spent about ten mins slow swinging the driver along my plane board working on the inside out.

Also did golf mobility drills.

Day 2:

Spent about 30 mins working on chipping with my 5H, on the tiny par 3 academy course.  I'm sure the answer is "it depends" but I've not yet settled on what my go-to club is for this kind of shot.  I started with an 8I, but my teacher suggested moving to something with more loft to generate more spin.  He uses a 52 degree wedge.  I have a 50, and I've used that a bit.  But I'd seen some players successfully using their rescue club, so I thought I'd try it.  It's better for direction, but much harder to judge distance.

Then went and played with my son at one of the local courses.  Played absolutely terribly.  Literally the worst I have played since I started this summer!  Got pretty angry with myself, but calmed down, and decided to call it a day afer 5 holes, as we were both tired and hungry, and the car park is right by the 5th green.

Spent time with the smash bag in the garage. Took out my frustrations from the way I hit the ball yesterday.

Day 3:

15  mins at the range, with wedges, working on understading how far I hit each club with a full swing.  I learned that my swing is not really consistent enough to give me a reliable answer.  However, I hit about balls and most of them were clean hits, which felt encouraging.

Did some back swings in front of the mirror watching hip turn and arm position. Did some slo mo  swings with the driver in the back yard. About 15 mins in all.

I almost forgot to post and screw up another month. Slow motion swings again focusing on rotating around the spine. Works good in slow mo, but I hope it starts impacting a full swing with a ball soon.

10/04 - grip, stance, slow take aways, balanced weight shift

Day 4:

Lesson with pro.  He's concerned that my swing is too steep and closes the club face, so we worked on a number of drills to encourage me to allow the club to drop and come through rather than be brought down with the action of my arms.  I'm going to try to work on some of these drills at home, or maybe in the garden.  He says I should practice with short swings and a 6I to get the sequence of events right.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
