Hello all,

I am interested in your opinion(s) about using the 5 hybrid vs the 5 iron in a punch shot (under trees) type of situation. I hit my 5 iron just fine...long and straight. I hit my 5 hybrid longer and can move the ball  a little bit. (Not that I know how to do it in degrees or anything)

I tried to do what I considered a normal punch shot, under low hanging branches of the trees, with the 5 hybrid and couldn't get the feel right. Not once, but many times - no one was behind me. Is there a specific way to do this or should I just not carry the hybrid. I kind of have to make a choice between the hybrid and the iron to carry in the bag.

Thank you in advance for your help.

What an amazing game this is.

I prefer the 5 iron over a hybrid, to me it is more versatile (like getting low shots out from under those pesky trees).  I hit my 3 iron 200 yards with better control, so my opinion, in my individual case, is not to use the hybrid.  But many players swear by hybrids, so that too is individual preference. :~(

I would experiment again with the 5H if you have not decreased the dynamic loft,  if you have not hinged the wrists much in the backswing and kept the club lower in the folllow through

When I hit a punch shot, I find it much easier to keep the ball low with an iron. With that being said, I have used my 2 hybrid for punch shots, especially from a suspect lie. Have you tried the shot with the 4 hybrid? For the average player, hybrids help get the ball up and are more forgiving. Do you find this to be the case?

For a time, I played a 2h and 3h. I ended up dropping the 3h because I could easily choke down on the 2h and get pretty similar results. I ended up putting the 3 iron in the bag for those days where I needed a more penetrating shot.

I don't have a 5i, have 5h, I will use for punch shots so long as doesn't have to be too low. If doing punch shot in tight quarters I usually go to my 6i all about preference.

I have not yet tried this. I will ...  I need to spend a little time on the range and a little time under some trees. :)

I am going to take the 3hybrid, 4hybrid, 5hybrid and try under trees.

Part of it has to do with the head-shaft combination in each club.

Hit some normal shots with both your 5i and 5H. Which one tends to launch lower? This might be the one to go with when hitting punch shots.

That's why I'm tempted to put my 3i back in the bag for certain courses with shaggy trees. I know I can hit a low slap fade with a 3i. (The 3i and 4i are not normal passengers in my bag).
