The shaft on my Yes! Golf Dianna has broken during a golf round, so I'm gonna buy a new putter...

I was wondering, to buy a new putter which are the factors that you have in consideration? I've been told that you have to like the looks of the putter, but I guess that thats not enought...

Putters are all preference. Looks, weight, sound, feel, and most important, it needs to give you confidence. If you don't feel like you are going to make all your putts, it isn't for you. Look at the November 2006 Golf Digest, Ernie writes an article on picking out putters.

Also, this may sound ridiculous, but a good-looking headcover helps too.

Well a replacement putter shaft costs about $5, probably less than $20 total to have it installed and re-gripped. If you like the putter then I'd seriously consider that. If you are wanting to use it as an excuse to buy a new putter then that's understandable too. For me, the putter must be pleasing to the eye at address, feel balanced & solid when I strike the putt and most importantly sink putts. The grip is really important to me too. I get along very well with Winn Excel AVS grips and all my putters have them.

You need to love the way it looks, feels, and works for you. I love my Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter. I played today and had 26 putts on my round with no 3 putts and 2 missed birdie putts from 3-4 feet. I tried a new left hand grip that helped keep my putter face square to the hole longer.

The weight of the putter matters most to me. I recently had some work done to my putter where it made is heavier. It helped me get less handsie.

I also adjusted the loft, too. The weight, making it heavier, has helped the most.

In my opinion, picking out a putter just requires some time to try out different ones.

Everything comes into play. Looks, weight, feel, height, grip, etc, etc.

Just try some out and see what happens and pick what feels right to you.

Do you feel confident standing over the ball with it, and more importantly, does the ball go in the hole when you hit it? If so, then it's a good putter.

i think if there's nothing wrong with your Dianna before it broke, i'd replace the shaft and grip. It's not easy to find a putter that works.

For new a one, it has to feel right to you and i'd also look into the alignment aid.
I like odyssey's marxman cuz it has that long straight line to help me align with the line on my ball.

Looks, length, feel, and swing-weight top my list. There are a few putter styles that I really love. I gravitate towards my preferences and then get the putter than meets my specs.

Length is an often-overlooked but important factor.

Must be 35 inches, look good to my eye, feel like it doesn't open or close when at address, and most importantly feel. These are my factors when buying a putter. I should know , I own ten putters, YIKES!

Hey everyone,

I bought an Odyssey White Steel 2-ball SRT (34 inches) about 1.5 years ago, and it seemed to fit as I had been trying to make a straight-back, straight-through putting stroke (so I played the ball a lot closer to my body, held the putter a lot more vertically).

But recently I've changed to an arc-stroke (my straight line was never terribly straight) and when I set up naturally, with the shaft as an extension to my left arm, I automatically must place the ball a lot further away from my body. But in this address position, the toe is definitely pointing up a fair bit - I wondered if any of you guys have experience in changing the lie angle of this putter?

Thanks, Ken

I have to be honest here folks. I pick a putter by if it works or not. The last time I switched was about 8 years ago and I took my current putter and my last one and hit balls on a putting green for an hour. By the end of that hour, the Rossie II was the winner because I was making everything. All of a sudden, it was the best looking putter I had ever seen.

If you don't have the luxury of doing this, look for a putter that appeals to you, has good balance, and that you can FEEL through the stroke. I just put a jumbo grip on my Rossie and went back to a standard grip after a month because I couldn't feel it anymore. Since I switched on a wim, I didn't want to weight it down, I just tried to fix something that wasn't broken. Even if you do buy a new putter, you should get the old one fixed if you like it. After all, if it worked, why would you switch? Well we all know that answer.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
