@gregsandiego mentioned this course awhile back, and I do not recall if I have played there before or not, but may get the chance for my daughter's birthday unless she prefers a venue closer to San Clemente (maybe in @Golfing Dad 's backyard.) Looking forward to trying out the new Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 I will be receiving this week.

Have fun. The course has some real challenges. The hole before their signature hole has you driving up a steep hill. It's punishing if you don't make it and watch your ball roll back down.

But then you get to a nice pitch off a steep cliff to a green far below.

They have good beer and hot dogs.

I'm not counting on anything this weekend as we get another monsoon prediction - are you ?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I have learned not to plan much of anything given the propensity of the S.O. to make a casino appearance.

I play that course often. It is in fair shape considering how many people play it. The greens are pretty fun. It used to have more grassy areas but to save water they now have some dirt where grass is not a must.

3 metal can be a great club in a few holes, including the first hole.

I think you'll enjoy it. Hopefully you can get a good deal.

Significant Other.  My daughter and I wont be going until Jan 31st though. Too early to plan yet, also depends on weather.

its either that or Arrowwood which is a lot nicer. We could also go to San Clemente Muni, or one of the others in the area. Cost wise, Oceanside would be less as I can get Retired Military rate. But no matter, we will see.

Arrowwood is very nice. Combo Tees, rolling hills, scenic water hazards, top notch facility.

Comparing prices Oceanside this Sunday at 10am is $36 and San Clemente $59. For me Oceanside is already a long drive north.

On the other hand I've always wanted to try San Juan Cap's course.

My wife and I stayed in Oceanside awhile after I got out of the Marine Corps. O-Muny became my home course, and I played it a couple of dozen times as my job was evening shift.

One thing I remember: It was fairly flat for the most part, but the fairways were raised and it drained off pretty quickly if it rained.

Many of the trees were freshly planted, and I imagine those that survived are quite large by now.

Focus, connect and follow through!

@WUTiger I still have not played this course. I happened to drive by and noted it is called The First Tee and has the Ely Calloway Golf Training Center there. I think it is the same course, but could be mistaken. It is on Douglas Drive though.

I've played Arrowhead twice now. Planned to play the muni but never got around to it. My daughter played a couple of days ago and said "lots of water hazards that were lakes".

What about Torrey Pines?  Or Coronado? Or Balboa?  Torrey not so good for Escondido @Hacker James, but for San Diego @NualgiLakes, $41 weekday rate for the North that's really hard to beat.  Of course if your not in San Diego city not so cheap.  There use to be a San Diego county rate, but that is now gone.

Yep. it was not so bad when I lived in Rancho Penasquitos, was able to get city rate. My choice lately is The Vineyard. $36 anytime (senior Military).

That's a course I like.

Torrey Pines North senior weekday rate of $29 is just ridiculous (in a good way). $29 to play a course that the PGA tour plays on and it's on the ocean with beautiful unrestricted views.  That's how I'll celebrate my 62nd birthday (in three years).

I do the players club deal at the Vineyard. Nice course. The wind can make it more difficult when it's blowing through

I looked into that deal. Doesn't make a lot of sense for me as my military discount is about the same, however....they do also give you I believe 20 range balls per day, free rounds at certain times, and I think at least one complimentary a year.  I'd have to take a closer look at the numbers to be certain.

    • Agreed, the way the rule reads is, "If the player’s ball in play is in the teeing area after A stroke."  It states A stroke, not the FIRST stroke on that hole. It specifies this applies to missing the ball and a drive that does not leave that teeing area but does not make a provision for any other stroke. The rules however define the teeing area as "The area the player must play from in starting the hole they are playing." and further states that "All other teeing locations on the course (whether on the same hole or any other hole) are part of the general area." The way I read it is if your ball comes to rest on the tee box you started the hole from you can re-tee it, but not from another tee box on that hole or another hole. An interesting way I think someone could use this rule is if they topped a drive then topped a fairway wood, and had let's say 300 in from a terrible lie, not confident they can get a fairway wood in the air. If the tee box is back on the line for an unplayable drop, they could drop in the tee box and re-tee. Super specific instance, and am not sure if the rule applies after a drop and not a stroke...
    • For clarity, and my edification, if the ball leaves the teeing area, hits something (a tree perhaps) and bounces back into the teeing area, can you retee? I think you can, but I'm not 100% sure. Further, if you skewer one into trees right near the tee, then attempt to play it out of those trees and it hits one of the trees and rebounds back into the teeing area, can you retee? That one I'm not sure about at all.   Edit: looks like it doesn't matter how the ball got there - if it's in the teeing area then you can retee it and move it. So that's a new answer to the "when can you move the ball closer to the hole?" question.
    • Right and in this instance, it's probably not unreasonable, given that the people doing this likely play matches against each other under those rules, so they should within their group have handicaps consistent with how they play. If they play anyone who's not willing to accept the "within the leather" thing, then they're only hurting themselves. IMO vanity caps are only an issue if handicap is determining eligibility for something and someone better, but with a higher index is squeezed out as a result.
    • OK, I didn't think gimmies were allowed in stroke play.
    • You can post your most likely score, Matt. That's fine.
