Well i'm sitting here on youtube watching all the old Shells Wonderful World Of Golf videos, and im wondering why they stopped doing them. I would love to see Rory go against Speith 1 on 1.

They were really good, but with the current PGA schedule it has all but eliminated the old Golf Silly Season, between the Tour Championship and the West Coast Swing.  And the best players don't play in a lot of these tournaments, as they don't need the money or FedEx points.

And on top of that, most of the players that everyone would want to see play, make so much money that they don't need the additional income.  So with all the money they make (prize money, sponsors, endorsements), it's pretty easy to see why, most of the really good players would rather just spend time with their family and friends and worry about traveling and playing on the PGA/European tours.  I think it would  be a draw if they did it, but would have to be very lucrative to get the good players to do it.

I miss that old show too. Too bad it's format does not fit today's players' schedule.

I like that show. I am a bit young to remember it live, but my dad always talks about it. As with most sports, the money has changed some things.

I enjoy those reruns, and I'm pretty sure I saw a lot of the original episodes in the 60's and 70's.  I agree that its probably that money has changed this, but the newer wrap-around schedule makes it even more difficult.

I really enjoyed the Par 3 challenge that Phil Mickelson and a few other big names would take part in every year in Northern Michigan. This went by the wayside a few years ago as well. Too bad.

Yeah, it was on ESPN, they would show in primetime on a weeknight sometime in August I believe, though it was taped earlier in the summer. It was as skins game, very unique.

Here's a write-up I found about one. http://www.michigangolf.com/departments/features/par-3-shootout-treetops-resort-12854.htm

In the days of WWoG, All-Star Golf, and Challenge Golf, the prize money on those shows was a considerable amount in relation to what you could earn for winning a Tour event. In 1962, for example, first prize money on Tour was in the $3,000 and $5,000 range. A pro could earn $2,000 by winning a match on a TV golf show.

If you offered Touring pros an 18-hole match today that took one day to film, $500K to the winner, $250K to the loser, every one of them would say, "Sign me up!"

Part of the appeal of those shows is you could see what the pros looked like because TV coverage of Tour events was so limited. Now you can see anybody you want to and that old appeal has been lost.
