I remember we had a thread a few years back about rangefinders and some posters thought it was cheating. Their reasoning was that people should be able to eye distances like in "the old days". But it was quickly pointed out to them that caddies, in the old days, had already measured off the course and knew the distances accurately. So people who played with these caddies had an advantage. 

Knowing distance is very important in golf. Add your shot zone tendencies and an understanding of how wind affects your shots and you will have a much better chance for a GIR. Pros know this, which is why they are so slow now. Anything that would help them speed up is welcome.

Even when I first got a range finder, I still found myself walking off yardage from known spots and marked sprinklers. It took me about a year to fully trust them and I still like to know if the pin is up or back so I sometimes compare the range finder yardage to the walked off yardage. But I find that they do speed up play for us amateurs.
