Hi all,

After reading the impact zone I have been trying to increase my lag. This message I got from reading the book was that at the start of the downsing the wrists are loose which leads to an increase in the wrist angle and hence lag. At first this worked out well for me and I was hitting my driver a good 20-30 yards further, however now I have developed a large block slice (ball start right and turns right) or the ball starts straight and turns right. After looking at a video of myself I am pretty sure it is due to overactive hips, at impact my hips are practically facing the target. However, I can not generate the feeling of getting lag without my lower body turning fast and keeping my wrists loose. Has anyone else had this problem ? Am I misunderstanding the message of the book ?

You're probably getting "stuck" behind. Lag is also very misunderstood. You see pictures in a book or on a video and you see a caddy view - 2 dimensional view of a 3 dimensional swing. You can 1) post a my swing video; or 2) take a lesson and find out why you're blocking shots.

Yes, having the hips wide open at impact can drag the path left at impact.

I recommend starting a My Swing thread if you haven't here,

This is not an uncommon problem. Once you experience some success with a certain "move", the natural tendency is to exaggerate it to get even more! But, there's a natural, physical limit to how much more you can get!

Since you had some success originally, but have now developed a block/slice, it sounds to me like you are overdoing things a bit. And mind your hips. If you simply "spin" them from the top of the backswing that's a good way to throw the clubhead outside and wipe the clubface across the ball. You need a lateral "bump" of the hips toward the target before you turn them. This can help you get the clubhead on the line.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
