Also a ball that's going to spin when you execute this shot. Prov1, Snell MTB, Bridgestone 330S, ect.... This won't work with range balls or topflite. If you have a course nearby with a short game practice area that's the best place to experiment with this type of shot.

Oh, yes, a urethane covered ball is a must, especially on hard, dry greens.

I can check a worn range ball on the practice green, but a practice green is not the same as on the course.

It's really just about angle of attack, strike, and loft. If you compress the ball with a shallow angle of attack you're going to get enough spin. A lot of guys think only their lob wedge will spin - But tour guys use all their wedges for these shots and they work. I think the key is angle of attack though. A shallow "brush" of the grass is what will create the most spin....at least in my experience.

Take a look at the spin loft stuff that was linked earlier. You may find it enlightening. Spin is simply a factor of the difference between the loft of your club and your angle of attack.

Bigger difference = more spin

Smaller difference = less spin

Shallow sweeps will create less spin than a steeper angle of attack when the loft on the two clubs are equal at impact.

In your example the dynamic loft is 5 degrees lower when there is a negative angle of attack, meaning the club is delofted relative to the horizon. As I stated before, if you keep your loft the same and only change the angle of attack your spin loft will increase. In your example the spin loft of both clubs is 20 degrees because the dynamic loft has been decreased in the second example.

Remember that though spin loft can increase, actual spin often begins decreasing past about 45-50° spin loft. Consider 90° spin loft, or 89°… you'd get very very very little spin.

IME spin is unreliable and if I am inside 70 yards I've already made a mistake or it's a par 5 I am playing well or short par 4. From that distance I hit a low flying runner that I judge like a putt unless I have to fly it to a high flat spot on the green. My distance control flying it is iffy.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
