Do any of you ever use a chipper? I guess its the same as using a 7 or 8 iron, but for me its easier to control.

I had a chipper years ago and it performed OK but since I now carry multiple hybrids I can use one of them instead.  However, I normally go with a short iron.

I've never owned one. I usually use this method with a pitching wedge or 9/8-iron:

Depending on the lie I might use a hybrid as well but it's a little harder to control distance for me.

As others on this site know, I'm a huge proponent of chippers.  For a lot of players, they're much easier to use than a 7 or 8 iron and can take strokes off your game.  I've known some mid-single-digit hcp players to use them with devastatingly good results.

They're not for everyone, but a lot of players would be well served to check their ego at the door and put one in the bag.  Good on ya!

But If you can endure being clowned on hardcore, go for it. The score matters most?

LMAO! That gif was funny as hell. I probably should use one but I don't. I use a wedge down to a 5 hybrid. Last weekend I had a number of chips from a distance in fairway where the 5h came in handy.

I suck so I can't say anything really about people who use chippers. Played with a guy a few times who used one.

Proper, i think.

I don't get why someone would give up a club in their bag for one of those things.  Just use a 7 iron..lol. Use a putting grip and stroke if you have to.

Ive always found chipping with hybrids a little tricky. The ball rockets off the face of those things alot of the time so I've had inconsistent results with distance control.

I like to use the 5h if I come up short of the green by about ten to fifteen yards but where there is nothing big to get over to get it up on green. Especially like using it if pin in back of green and it's uphill sloping

I do the same. I like to keep the ball on the ground if i can. I played a 15-20 yard runner a couple times at the state open last year and one of the older pros i was paired with applauded my old school game. lol

Similar thoughts here, but ultimately depends on personal preference I guess.  I'd have a real hard time choosing a club to pull from the bag to replace with a chipper just based on yardage gaps for each club.  Suppose 3/4 swings, choking down, etc could help close gaps for a missing iron or something...but I'm not very strong in that area and prefer to use full swing/stock shots anytime I can.

Can see it the other way too though, as I play with a friend whose distance gaps get pretty close together once he's in the hybrid/4-iron/5-iron range.  He put a chipper in last Fall...pulled the 4-iron and loves the set-up.  I'll definitely have to give him this one though:
