In my opinion, snobbery is the worst part about golf.

Often, people stand from the other fairway, or nearby and watch you tee off. If you do not hit a good shot they joke with their playing partners and I think that is just childish.

Also another arrogant part of golf is when you play a par 4/5 and you are obviously out of the peoples driving distance but they wait until you are much further away before taking their drives just for the sake of trying to look much better than they are. Weedy 13 year olds who think they are amazing because they spend their life at the golf course can't carry 270+ straight so I don't know why they wait for you...but the best part of golf for me is then watching the arrogant people hacking their tee shots sideways .

What is the worst part about the golf for you?

I'd say that slow play bothers me a little bit, especially if it is your playing partner that is the guilty one. I often play with someone who gets more enjoyment out of finding other player's lost balls than the game of golf. He slows us down and then bottle necks everyone behind us. Then we have to rush in an attempt to catch up to the party in front of us. Not very relaxing. Maybe he was left out of Easter egg hunts when he was a kid.

ball hunters probably annoy me more than anything else - its cool when they let everyone play through but when you have 4 guys in front of you with their ball retrievers that arent shooting it really makes me want to start taking target practice

Cheaters, whether it's shaving strokes, the foot wedge when no one is looking, sandbaggers etc, they all bother me.

Slow play-Sometimes, I think it's intentional. I'm a big believer in warming up before I play and going through the entire bag. This way, when I'm on the course, I don't take two and three practice strokes before every shot.

Sexism-I find that when a woman is in our group every guy feels it's necessary to give her advice. Shut up. If she wanted it, she would ask. Leave her alone and let her golf.

Agree, I played with a guy once that went throught his whole shot routine, stood over it and took a swing, divot and all, first thought was that he was wiffing it, took me four holes to realize what he was doing. Drove me nuts, I kept looking up for the ball everytime, I must have looked like a jack*ss.

Advice on the course bugs me significantly - targeted at anyone. Reserve it for playing lessons and when asked.

I remember this one time, a guy in front of my group took between 8 and 12 practice swings per hit. It was ridiculously slowing us all down. We made the best of it and starting wagering how many he would take for the next time.

People who take it too serious..

I'm out of the house.
I'm in the sunshine.
I'm usually with my best friends.
I am usually puffing on a fine cigar.
I have drinks delivered to me on a regular basis.

Life doesn't get much better then that.

At the end of the day my score may reflect my golf game, but it rarely reflects the amount of enjoyment I got out of my day!

On my tombstone: "If this is the worst thing that ever happens to me, I'm doing just fine!"

I hate slow play. And I bet if you got 100 golfers off any course, the vast majority would say the same thing.

It doesn't even deserve an explanation - speed up. And when you see a guy under 30 behind you, don't slow down, for God's sake.

Or over 65. I've yet to find a slow player under 65 around me. Even the ones who walk seem to be moving fast. And scoring well.

I see what you mean, too - 9 out of 10 problems with slow play I have usually consists of an older foursome (or twosome). The other 1 out of 10 comes from the foursome of hackers who only go out once a year, and sure, they're playing their best and chumming it up with their buddies, but they've also got a case of beer and they're going to take seven hours. I've called the clubhouse and asked them to send the ranger out before - no effect.

And there's what I consider a real problem - rangers who don't do their job.

I played on Memorial Day last year. The front nine took over 3 hours to play. I called the clubhouse, three times, to please have a group removed from the course. The golf course is not the place to play hack-a-shack nor to re-hit balls. The ranger came out, twice. The 2nd time he asked me what he wanted me to do. I said, remove them from the course or move them up two holes. These guys had no clue about golf etiquette and were one and a half holes behind, at least. The ranger refused. I left as I don't believe in a 7 hour round.

He wouldn't let you play through them? That would have been my first choice.

By the way, don't play in Japan. From what I understand, it takes about 9 hrs to play 18 holes. Maybe someone from Japan can confirm this rumor.

Couple things... I like to take 2-3 practice strokes before every shot, I don't think this is all that unusual. This DOES NOT waste that much time, I usually golf mid-day and when it's me and my usual playing partner we will finish in about 3 hours if no one holds us up. All good players have a pre-shot routine, I like to swing the club 2-3 times to feel my tempo and what I'm trying to do with a particular shot (i.e. knockdown, 3/4, draw, fade, etc.). Plus, I'm a 10 handicap, so it's not like I'm topping 3 shots 25 yds each.

Also, I always do warm up, but some courses don't have ranges, so you can't hit all the shots pre-round anyway. Not to mention, as I said above, I hit a variety of shots on any given day, and warmed up or not, I want to feel the proper swing before I hit it. Bottom line, practice shots are OK, just not excessive, waggle is OK, just not excessive, lining up a putt is OK. Many of these things can be done while others are hitting and going about their business, depending on where they are. Just use COMMON SENSE, play ready golf, etc. Lastly, on a busy day, I'm ALWAYS waiting for greens to clear, so I could take 30 practice swings if I felt like it. What wastes the most times is hitting MORE shots, chipping from one side of the green to the other, ball hunting after hitting your 3rd in the woods, and NOT playing ready golf. -Just my 2 cents

He wouldn't let you play through them? That would have been my first choice.

There were two groups ahead of us. The situation was that we were on the tee, a group on the fairway, a group on the green. This consistently happened for three holes. When we reached the 5th hole, we saw that no one was in front of them and called the clubhouse. On the 7th hole, it was just a disaster. They were teeing off, group on the tee box, waiting, group coming off the green. We called again.

My friends and I always let the group in front of us finish the opening hole before teeing off. We're walkers and the idea is that we can get a good pace without having to worry about playing through. That day? I won't wish on my worst enemy.

My private club will not enforce pace of play. Their policy is that slow golfers must allow faster players to play through or around.

I am not the waiting type, so I just go around slow groups, sometimes having to walk 13-14 holes just to play 9 holes. It is a pain, but what else can you do ?

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
