No, probably didn't do it in a single take, but finding the possibilities is one of the great things about golf.

This created a flashback of playing No. 9, a 395-yd. par 4 at Meadowlake GC in Enid, OK. circa 1984.

I somehow snap-hooked my drive - probably the only time in my career ;-) - and it hit a tree and ricocheted up the left-side line of pine trees in the rock-hard red clay soil.  I ended up about 70 yards off the green, on pine straw rough, with a branch handing down in front of me about 2 feet off the ground.

So, I take my dense-bar Acushnet putter and decide to run it toward the green. I ran it hard, through the swale in front of the green, across the green... and OB!

If anyone ever says to me, "Why don't you just putt it..." I say no, and promise to explain why on the 19th Hole.

It would have to be an exceptionally tough lie for me to consider rolling the ball through a bunker. I have used a putter in a greenside bunker a few times when the "sand" is so hard/firm that one doesn't make foot prints when walking in the bunker.

I've done that with really firm sand.

Ya think?  That look like a pretty tough, sandy lie that he might fluff into the bunker if he used a wedge.  I would think the most likely outcome with a putter is that you hit it too hard and roll it to the back of the green.  The percentage may favor that if he's not too confident in a wedge there.

On the other hand, those tufts of grass around the lip look a little dangerous to roll through.

Nah.  Not a great lie, but really, not a particularly hard shot.  Certainly not difficult to leave a reasonable putt to get up and down.  Much more likely than the "putt'.

Someone who feels so uncomfortable with that shot that he's gonna putt it, is someone who just isn't that accomplished a player, which is why I said I'd play him... ;-)

Gottcha.  He really did just thread the needle on two of those grass tufts didn't he.

There are several courses in UT with sand traps (or pebble/gravel traps) that one could probably get away with using a putter.  I like my putter too much though...
