Been struggling off the tee past couple of rounds. Hitting shots high, short and right. It feels like the ball is just flicking off the club face, no compression at all. A couple guys said I was not getting my hands through the hitting area or through the ball. I'm not getting an image or feel for what they mean. When I try to move them faster I get a huge pull or hit 6" behind the ball. Its mostly with driver or 3 wood off the tee, a short iron or wedge to the green is high, straight and the distance I want.

What are some drills or thoughts for correct hand speed, movement etc. through the hitting zone? Honestly, I don't think I ever thought about it before but the advice has put it in my head.

Thanks

The problem with advice, whether it makes any sense or not, is that we remember it.  I have, recently, lost touch with my 3 wood.  I'm going to schedule a lesson and see just what the heck is going on.  Why not do the same?  It has often happened that I had to see, not hear, what I was doing.  Bon chance.

Not sure what they are telling you, but possibly leading the hands ahead of the club head at impact?

Try looking here for some drills, with emphasis on leading the hands at impact?

I'm sure you'll get more specific advice eventually. . .

They could mean you are casting or flipping at the ball, which is Key 3 in-line impact or previously flat left wrist at impact.

The Key 3 video in the thread below is a good place to start if that is the issue. Without a video of your swing, it is tough to tell.

Another drill you can do is just start by chipping with whatever club you are working with, even driver. Emphasize having the hands in front of the club head at impact. Repeat with short back and down swings and follow through about the same distance. Remember to have your hips and shoulders turn through impact too.

Then gradually lengthen the swing  keeping the same feel at impact.

I went out on the range, rare for me, and hit some balls. As you can imagine, when your trying to focus on one part of your swing you can some interesting results. But what I think was going on is decel at impact, hitting with dead hands. If they had said your trying to steer the ball it would have made more sense to me.

Anyway, I got good results on the range so I'm sure they will transfer to the course.................right?

Sure, with focused practice.  One session may not do the trick.  Keep doing it!

On the other hand, focusing on your hands may not be the cure.  As a result of some videos and in-person instruction, my "task" from @iacas was to improve my hip rotation in the forward swing.  We talked about a drill where my left leg straightened, and my hands followed my forward hip through and around my body.  My hands move better when I rotate my hips properly.  I don't bring this up to suggest that your problem relates to hip turn, only to suggest that the symptom that your buddies noticed may be only that, a symptom of something else.  It might be a good idea to get some instruction from a qualified instructor, rather than self-diagnose with the help of your (well meaning but untrained) friends.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
