Hello all,

I've been spending ALOT of time researching bags before I purchase a new one.  I was pretty set on a 14 top, specifically a ping hoofer 14 (pro being consensus great reviews) or calllway fusion 14 (pro being looks and some positive reviews) until I stumbled across multiple articles and forums bashing 14 ways...with a lot of folks complaining about a lot of difficulty getting the clubs in and out.  I was surprised by this as this was one of the main issues that was prompting me to go with a 14 way with my current 3 way.  I've read some reviews which claim that 5-7 way tops actually have less issues with club binding.  I guess my primary concern would be to determine if the club binding issue in 14 ways is a matter of fact or a matter of a opinion.  Would greatly appreciate any input from folks who have experience with different types of bags.

thanks in advance for your assistance!

are you carrying your bag or putting in a buggy/cart? if you are carrying the stand bag binds the clubs together when you use the stands and tilt it forward. if you want less binding, grab your club 1st then tilt it forward to stand on its own. nothing wrong with 14 way, just user error.

My apologies. I met to include that I was on the market for a stand bag, not a cart. I do ride in the car most of the time when I play...so I'm not necessarily looking for anything super light weight necessarily

That makes a lot of sense.  Thanks!

I suppose my question now would be when I'm out at the range or any other time I would have the stand down does anyone find that one type of bag over another is easier for pulling clubs out and putting back in--from a 5 to a 14 way?

i had a ping hoofer 4 way and it still gets stuck in that. any carry bag is going to get stuck because the focus is to make it small and light for carrying. 14 way would get stuck more since you only have a little hole to pull it out of. 4 way is more spacious and  can get better angles when wiggling your clubs out.

if you ride "MOST" of the time, you should be in the market for a cart bag and not a stand bag. I only used stand bags in high school because we had to walk in competitions with no buggies. If you are riding most of the time you will be a lot happier with a cart bag, lots of room, more origination, and tons of pockets.

Appreciate the input...while it's tempting for the reasons you named, and honestly there are some cart bags I prefer the look of over my favorite stand bags, I plan on walking more often once I get a better bag.  Also, I have seen to many folks have their cart bags blown over and clubs smash on the ground at the range on a windy day.  Plus, some of these new stand bags have 12 pockets, like the hoofer 14 or Callaway fusion.

Saw your feedback on hoofer and 14 way. Thanks

Your grip size makes a big difference. I've had more bags than I can count. I use mid-size grips and every stand bag I've owned has club binding. I do have a black ping hoofer 14 in mint condition I'd practically give away should you decide on it. I have a Callaway Aqua Dry stand bag that I really like. It binds less than the Ping 14 way Hoofer. Getting your club out when bag is straight up helps, but if you have Midsize grips or bigger, forget it.

I have mid size grips also and use the Ping Pioneer Cart Bag.  I either ride in a cart or walk using a push cart.  I prefer to walk and the Ping Pioneer is not a very heavy bag to use on a push cart. I can have some minor issues with the grips binding but with a wiggle in they go and out they come.

Why I went with the Ping Pioneer is the volume that big boy can hold and man can that bag can store everything including the kitchen sink.  That is what I wanted, storage and ease of getting into the storage pockets.  Ping does a fantastic job engineering their bags.  Plus they are one of the few companies that actually makes their own golf bag.

If you do not want the small Ping name on your bag then I would look at the Sun Mountain C-130 cart bag.  That is also a fantastic bag!

Interesting note, the Ping Yellow grips (mid size) did not bind in the Pioneer but the Winn Dry-Tac Mid size can bind some but not really not much and very seldom during a round.  As stated before just a slight wiggle and they come out and go in.

Fortunately, I use standard sized grips.  I will most definitely be sending you a message about the hoofer 14.  Thanks!

I have had less than 14 ways and I hated them.  They bound like crazy.  The logic that a 14 way binds more because of a little hole is flawed.  The 14 way has a divider to the bottom so the grips don't bind on each other and become twisted which is how binding happens.

I have had both types, a Titleist 6 way (maybe), a Titleist 14 way and a Sun mountain 14 way.  I prefer the 14 way because of binding the downside is that they are a bit heavier.

Good luck!

I've been a huge fan of the Titelist stand bags.  I've tried the Callaway and did not like them at all...I gave the one I got to my son.  The TItleist have been really, really durable and I like that they are both lightweight and still have plenty of options for storage.  I normally walk, but when I put it on a cart, the base of the bag has no issues fitting in the cart.

I'm not a fan of the 14-way bags...mine is the 4-way with larger holes.  I don't have any issues getting clubs in or out at all.  Plus the 14-way bags are a bit heavier as well.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I was close to pulling the trigger on a titelist players 14 but, I wound up taking vinsk up on his offer for the ping hoofer 14.  In the end I'll get to give a 14 way a go without the hefty price tag.

No problem.  The ping hoofer was easily my second choice.  Ping's bags have been very, very good through the years.  I'm just slightly more partial to the Titelist bags now.

Good luck and please hang around here!  Lots of good discussion on all things golf-related!

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm new so u dont gotta pay ATTN to me.but I have always used stand bags, my latest a callaway warbird, liked it but I'm usually in a cart so I moved to a Taylormade Catalina bag and I love it, bigger than a stand but smaller than your normal cart bags. I will prob use this one till it comes undone. Plenty of room, it separates each club so.they dont knock and it has a cooler pocket that can hold 4 12 oz bottles of water, and two handles to make carrying easier. Just my 2 cents

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
