I looked for an answer already on the forum, but couldn't find one.  During those rounds where other factors mean you deviate from official RoG scores, are you technically not supposed to post those rounds?  Could be any number of reasons, but a common one for me is I lose a ball where I didn't think I would, but am not going back to the tee to re-hit in consideration of me and other groups pace of play.  So you take w/e penalty you think is fair and just score that.

It's an unfinished (set of) hole(s), but you'd need to finish at least 7 for a 9 hole round and 13 for an 18 hole round the proper way.

Sometimes it does not seem fair that you cannot find your ball and its impractical to go back to the tee but my understanding is once you deviate from the rules of golf you cannot post it for handicap purposes.  Perhaps someday the rules will change to allow the option of taking a 2 stroke penalty and a drop, but till then....

Yeah, unfortunately, 2 strokes is actually not representative of stroke and distance. There are many courses where you end up in "habitat" space more than one time.

Unfortunate too that, if you have more than two holes where you lose a ball without employing stroke and distance on a 9 hole round and 5 times on 18 holes you can't post anything.

To be honest, I think Stroke and distance is fair. It makes you change your strategy sometimes, or often. I've had 6 off the tee before, and changed my strategy and felt pretty good to get double par. Possibly be because my suffering finally ended! :-D

5 and a lateral, I counted it as a tee shot "mistake" rather than my "second" shot which was pretty awesome! That was my strategy, that it's better in the water than OB. . .:-P

I still don't agree with that. More was said in the other topic.

Hopefully not too far off topic, but I recently shot a very low round (for me) but played 11 of the 18 holes solo before joining another group.

Just to confirm, that's a practice round and cannot be submitted towards a handicap, correct?

You played the last 7 with someone, you should post a 9 hole score.  There really isn't a category for a "practice round."

Thanks Dave. I will post the 9 hole score after reading up on the par + handicap strokes and applying that to the solo holes.

Please excuse my ignorance on this (I try to find answers in the USGA manual before asking). Does the 9 hole score have any impact on my 18 hole index?

As far as the "practice round", it's an option with the handicap service I use (The Grint) simply so one can keep track of rounds that cannot count towards their HC such as solo or off-season rounds. I understand it isn't an official category.

Two nine-hole scores are combined into an 18-hole score.

In my opinion, and this is my interpretation of the Rules, you might be playing a practice round if you're testing out different clubs, so you're taking two attempts on each shot, or if you're getting a playing lesson, or maybe you're just trying out shots from different locations on many holes.  In each case, you'd be intentionally breaching the Rules on multiple occasions, so you shouldn't report the score.  Same if you're using a laser with the slope feature turned on to learn about the course.  If you're going out with the intention to play by the rules, and to try to shoot the best score you can, you should post the score.

If you don't complete a hole, you record your most likely score for handicap purposes.  I won't rehash the discussions over when Rules 4-1 and 4-2 should apply ( see the thread @iacas referenced, and the rules here:  http://www.usga.org/Handicapping/handicap-manual.html#!rule-14377)

but to clarify something that @NJpatbee and @Lihu mentioned, you can have any number of incomplete holes and still be required to post the score, as long as you're not attempting to manipulate your handicap.

This seems odd to me but I suppose I have to get used to what the intent of the rule is.

Anyway, this is what I did to post the 9 hole score...

My actual score on holes 1 and 2 (played solo) were a triple and double bogey. The holes were rated as the two easiest (just to simplify it, they have a handicap of 18 and 17, respectively). I entered par +1 on each. I can't help but feel like that's cheating or simply incorrect.

I'm admittedly dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to this, so anyone is free to ridicule if this is way off the mark....

I'm playing with an index of 22. If on an 18 hole course, I subtract 18 from my handicap which leaves me 4. On the four toughest holes, I would score par +2 on any holes not played within the ROG. On holes rated 1-14, it would be par +1 on those not played within the rules.

Since I'm playing a 9 hole course, the holes rated first and second hardest would be par +2, on the 7 easier holes it would be par +1.

If my index was below 18 - let's say a 12 - I'd score par +1 on any of the 12 toughest holes, and even par on any of the 6 easiest not played within the rules of golf.

Is any of this correct?

That's correct except your index may be several "strokes" different than your course handicap. You use the latter for unplayed holes.
