Here's the story:

I began playing golf in my teens; played couple times a week during summers, never got good enough to break 100 more than a couple times.

Started playing less frequently into my 20's and 30's; not surprisingly, got worse, so pretty much gave up.

Now 65, started playing once or twice weekly about 3 years ago. I've probably taken about a dozen private lessons (from 3 different pros) and attended a 3-day golf school. This summer, I've probably practiced my "lesson tips" 3-4 times a week.

Nevertheless, I don't see any significant improvement. My index is north of 30.

I guess what I'm asking is whether anyone has suggestions, or should I just conclude that I can't improve and give up.

Thanks in advance for suggestions (or recommendations to quit). :-(

Take a look at your game. What are your weaknesses? Where are your misses? Work on those things. Are you working on those weaknesses or mindlessly hitting balls when you practice? Are you paying appropriate tees when you play? If your hitting a five or six iron as a second shot into most par fours I'd encourage you to move up a set of tees.

It's an excellent sport for older people. Where else can you go out and laugh at youselves all day and have fun walking all over the course?

To be perfectly blunt, 30HC is likely a good average handicap for a weekend type duffer. You're probably about average for people who go out once a week.

However, you probably came on this site to try to improve. There's a wealth of information and lots of helpful people to examine your swing if you capture it on video and post it here. Or just post questions.

Remember that you're out there to have fun and enjoy yourself.

I have recently started playing golf for the first time at 45, so not even at handicap level yet. I was partially inspired by my 70-year old father who took up the game a few years ago. He is dreadful - but loves the game - I think he is down to 36 or something, and his improvements seem to come in spurts. Likewise, I don't seem to be a natural, but I enjoy it tremendously. I consider even the worst of rounds a lovely walk and some fresh air. I know it is frustrating to be stuck, but I am assuming you enjoy it, so why give up? You may well find that you'll get a few spurts and improve, but in the meantime just have fun.

Thanks for the responses.

RJN, I wish I could be as "zen" as your father, but honestly, no, I'm not getting much enjoyment. ?

Lihu, thanks, but not getting many laughs, still want to improve, so I'll try to use the site to improve.

Chilepepper, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm not hitting balls mindlessly, but working on my lessons (maybe not). To answer your question, I'm probably hitting 3 wood on most second shots, because I'm only hitting (good) drive 180-190, so still have 160+ to green.

dennyjones, thanks, I'll see if I can figure out how to post my swing.

Thanks, Erik. It looks like your original post on filming was in 2010; would you say that iPhones are now capable of decent quality video?

Yeah, absolutely. High-speed video on iPhones is great.
