Mixed bag different style clubs

Heh ro....new here...feels cozy...I am wondering with some pros mixing and matching clubs if this might affect new sets.. Would you buy a set of name brand clubs if say it had graphite cavity back long irons and steel shafted muscleback short irons and forged 9 through wedges?

If the new set guaranteed it would help shave strokes of my current game, I'd buy it. Set make up wouldn't matter to me. 

But, there in lies one of problems with golf equipment. There are no guarantees to a better game. Lots of claims by the manufacturers, but no guarantees. 

I was once in Texas without my clubs. I was invited to go golfing at a really nice course out side of Fort Worth. My nephew took me to several golf outlets where I purchased a bunch of different brand clubs to make up a playable set for myself. It worked out really well for me.

My set consists of two hybrids, six irons, and three wedges. The hybrids have graphite shafts and the irons are a progressive design that has less game improvement qualities in the short irons than the long ones.

I already have a mixed bag. It was put together in bits and pieces, but I'd have no problem buying a mixed set if I'm properly fitted by a good clubfitter.

While forged clubs might have commonalities in their looks, there's nothing about the forging process that makes a club look like what you'd expect from a player's iron.

Well, Mizuno and others encourage you to mix versions of their clubs...Maybe more forgiving 4-7 and the more traditional 8-PW. But while I might do that, I don't think I would mix shafts. Shafts are so important to the overall playability of a club for me that they are a major factor in my decisions about clubs to try. Anyway, just an old guy's rant.  -Marv

That's why I brought up hybrids. Most people who play hybrids are playing them with graphite shafts that are different than the rest of their iron sets. The same can be said for wedges; the shafts in a player's wedges are often different than the shafts in their irons.

Progressive sets design the lower-lofted clubheads to have different launch properties than the higher-lofted ones. I can see the possibility of using a different shaft in your 5I than your 9I as an extension of that concept, as long as it's properly fitted to your swing.

Yeah. I should have been clear...I was talking about my iron sets. They have the same shafts tuned to me. My separately-acquired hybrids and DLR's have different shafts from my irons and the driver as well (though my pro club friend did some work to help coordinate it). And my separate wedge set are different shafts from everything, but match among themselves.

Like Marv was alluding to...combo set is fine but same shafts.  Need the continuity in feel.  That's also the reason I changed out the heavy wedge shafts for what was more in line with my irons.
