I had sooo many days of hitting fat shots it wasn't fun.

I'm now where you were then. 1,000 beautiful practice swings in a row.....fat when I try to hit the ball. I don't know what changes in my head. I try to just swing with the ball in the way, but it doesn't always end up that way.

Have you ever gone to the range and practiced w/ your PW and SW hitting 25-30 yard shots? This really helped me feel what it was like to have my hands out in front of the ball. I then gradually went into other clubs, trying to somewhat re-create that feeling.

Once I felt it...it was like a light bulb went off.

I can't recall that I have. For some reason I get it in my head that I have to hit full shots on the range or I'm somehow wasting money, lol. Oh the ways this game will mess with your head.

Driver = 310yards
3 wood = 270yards
5 wood = 250yards

3 iron = 240yards
4 iron = 230yards
5 iron = 220yards
6 iron = 200yards
7 iron = 185yards
8 iron = 170yards
9 iron = 160yards
pw = 145yards
54 sw = 130yards
60 lw = 100yards

Also bear in mind that this is at high altitude, you can deduct 10yard for sea level.

Also note, I dont really try and hit the ball as far as I can with each club, I swing at about 90% most of the time, so also roughly 10 yards off my max dist.

See GOLF magazine's recent club test by average golfers. They list each person's true clubhead speed and carry distances for 6 irons and drivers (I believe). I was really surprised at how many of the lower handicap testers hit their 6 irons in the 130 to 140 yard range, while lots of pros hit a 6 iron 200 yards.

My swing speed is good at 105, but I don't get the distance I did when I was younger because I have a more arcing swing with a high ball flight and less snap just before impact; the tradeoff is a lot more accuracy and much lower scores for the loss in distance. Golf is a lot more fun when you are always in the fairway and are not just trying to get greens in regulation, but actually trying to get close to the pin.

My irons have an overlap in yardage, for example I will hit my 7 iron 130 to 145 yards, my 6 iron 140 to 155 yards and my 5 iron 145 to 160 yards and a 4 iron only 150 to 165 yards. I no longer carry a 3, 2 or 1 iron. Beyond that and I use a fairway wood so for a 170 yard par 3 I would hit an easy 5 wood and for a 185 yard par 3 I would hit a firm 5 wood. Over 190 gets me into my 3 wood and over 210 puts me into my driver, which I won't hesitate to hit from the fairway at a pin.

I also carry a 7 wood that I use for 150-165 par 3s exclusively as it drops the ball almost straight down and I can use it to aim right at a pin.

I know I could spend a lot of time working on my swing timing and add some additional snap and probably get back 20-30 yards, but I don't like playing from the rough even if its only a few holes per round. I'm content with a 230-240 yard drive down the middle every time.

I agree with you, since cutting my driver down to 44" I have lost a little distance, but I am happier in the fairway than playing from under the trees.

I average 210-225 on drives, second shots are a lot easier from that nice manicured lie.

    • There seems to be a lot of buzz around the new Maxfli Tour and TourS balls, especially with a handful of tour pros signing on to play them. My understanding is that the Tour is similar to the Titleist ProV1 and TourS is like the Titleist AVX. Has anyone played them? My main concern is that while I liked the feel and performance of the Maxfli balls of many years ago, I found the paint job on them was lousy. The finish looked a bit faded right out of the box, and after a few holes they had faded even more, and sometimes the paint was actually coming off. I'm hoping to find out if they are using a different factory or improved their paint process.  Opinions, please.
    • Day 298: range session during lunch. Hit balls for about 20 minutes, focusing on start line and curve. Much better than last night. Then did a stack putting session, which was solid (for me).
    • Day 2 (3 May 24) - Played 18 with the Men’s group today….a fun round in which my elderly neighbor was part of the foursome I was in.
    • You advertise LIV as "golf but louder" You had DJ's pumping Jock Jams all over the place. You have Bros who are really into golf and TFG shot gunning 26 oz bud lights, while double fisting a 19 oz coors. What type of behavior do you expect?
    • Did LIV pros cross ‘etiquette’ line at Masters? 3-time major winner has thought Did LIV Golf pros cross an “etiquette” line last month at the Masters? Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has a thought. I do not mind cursing. I rather see some emotion on the course and honest reactions to bad shots or what not. I didn't catch it being a TON of cursing in this Masters. It was not noticeable.
