I just returned from a trip to Myrtle Beach (before Thanksgiving). Played a couple of the Legends courses as well as Heritage Club (the best one of the bunch). Every round took about 4.5 - 5 hours. Brutal. Went with some buddies so I expected slow play, but the wife wants to go now so I'm trying to find out the best time to go and not have to play marathon golf. We will sit on the beach too (if the weather is good), I'm wondering when would be a good time. Don't care when we play (we live in Florida so playing the afternoons in the heat doesn't bother us). Any advice?

Which legends courses did you play? I am driving down there tonight after work with a buddy and we have a tee time tomorrow at Legends Heathland.

We play the Wizard on Saturday and Myrtle Beach National Kings North on Sunday.

I assumed it wouldnt be very crowded this time of year, were the long rounds due to the group of guys you were with or due to the courses being crowded?

Courses were packed. We played the Heathland and the Mooreland. Maybe because of holiday?

Gotcha. Hopefully it wont be as bad this weekend for us. Any tips or advice for Heathland? How was the condition of the course? (I'm sure it will be better than what the course are up here at the moment)

Courses were in good shape. Easy to three putt.  Greens were slick. Greens are also pretty big. Not too tight. Heathland and Mooreland (I thought) played a little longer than the yardages.

We've always traveled (in general) just before or after "peak" season in MB. Mid September to October, and late April (After any Easter holidays) into May. Never endured a 4.5-5 hr round. Summer months can be crowded, but only for the morning times. If you're willing to put up with a bit of heat, make a later time in Summer. Same with the peak seasons- You can take a chance and go out a bit later and hope to finish before sundown- courses are less crowded and there can be price breaks.

We've also gone when there are those big festival weeks (couple of Biker weeks, Grad week, etc...), and had NO issues with long rounds. Bikers fill up the downtown rooms leaving less space for golfers- courses are less crowded. However, the trade off can be traffic getting to and from courses. If you are north, avoid the southern courses and vice-versa. The bypasses and stuff helped getting to the courses along the 501 corridor, but the the area around the speedway can be a zoo during biker weeks.

If you live in FL and dont need a beach for a golf vacation I cannot recommend Reynolds Plantation enough. On Lake Oconnee in Greensboro GA. 126 holes of immaculate courses and a Ritz Carlton to boot.

Thanks for the tip. We are looking into a trip to Reynolds Plantation. We'll sit by the lake instead of the Ocean.

Cuscowilla is an awesome Coore/Crenshaw course down there but not part of Reynolds. It's private but we'll worth the attempt to play too.

Ughh, I once played a Sunday afternoon round at Caledonia. We teed off at 1:00 pm and were barely past 13 when the sun was setting at around 7:30.  Apparently there was some sort of outing in the morning and a bunch of nubes were slowing everybody down.  Also had some dimwit from NYC behind us screaming at us to hit our shots long before the group in front of us was clear.  It was AWFUL.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
