I currently play Ping G25s and have been looking at the new G400 or perhaps the Ping G, but are they worth it? I mean what will I get for a $1000, a few extra yards, (maybe). I want more distance like everyone else but that has more to do with my swing then the club. What makes you upgrade your irons if your playing your current set OK.

I've heard buying irons every 5 years is where u will see performance differences.

Figure too if u can sell the G25 irons on eBay for $200 that knocks the G400 price down.  Maybe look for a used G400 set.  I think when u figure it all out, u won't be spending $1000.

Opt for the G400 over the G...to me just a better finish on them.  I've hit them both, just like the G400 better for some reason.

The G25 isn't really old enough yet to warrant upgrading.  The G or G400 are practically the same club.  Upgrading, you'll likely see a higher launch, meaning a little more distance, and more forgiveness across the face.  Irons don't change too much over time.  Unless you change your swing enough to warrant a different fit club, the grooves are worn out, or there is a significant enough change in technology, I wouldn't upgrade quite yet.  If you do decide to upgrade, wait until the new G700's come out this spring, because the G and G400 irons will drop in price a little.

EDIT: To add onto what NM golf said, everyone I've talked to also said that the G400 irons are great.  I have the driver and it's definitely a game changer, but the irons didn't change from the previous series in the same way.

I have not hit the irons, but several people I work with got a set and they all love them. I have the driver and its the best driver I have ever hit.

I think I'll wait and see what happens next year, thanks all for the advise. I don't need a higher launch, if anything I need a lower launch. I launch my G25s really high, maybe to high, it may be costing me some yardage. I'll look at the G700s as suggested above and get another proper fitting. One small point is I like the look of the older Pings, without the feral, just a matter of taste.

Yes I would wait to check out the G700's. They're going to be PING's version of the hollow muscle design, like the TaylorMade 790's but I think more towards the game improvement side of things.

I have only tried the G400 Driver and hit a couple of dozen drives.  Very good driver and I hit the ball about as good as my current G15.  Perhaps its my swing speed (88-85mph) or ability but I did not notice much of a difference.  I am also a "resister" when it comes to adjustable clubs but I know at some time I will have to make the switch.  For myself there is not reason to switch from the G15.

I currently play G30s with a stiff shaft, and was recently fit for G400s with a regular shaft. I hit the 400s higher, and 9 yards longer.
