Day 168 (17 Oct 24) - semi-monthly walking of nine holes today.  Went this morning after helping the wife with her students on a math project around assembly of a couple of storage shelf units (was a blast working with the kids).  Air was brisk but breezy (solid hurting wind going out, wee doggy helping wind coming back), course is fall pristine and not busy - played up as set of tees as I had 3w and 4h as the only long clubs, focus was on iron play.  Love these working on the swing, distance control sessions - that calls for focused course management.

Day 17 - 2024-10-17

I practiced for 20 minutes today while exaggerating the backswing and downswing stuff. Kept it short, hit the 6I about 120 yards.

Day 92: range session at lunch. Worked on driver a bit - needed to get the ball teed further forward. Filmed my swing as well. Then did a stack session.

Day 93: putted on my mat for a bit while working. Making sure the handle is more raised at address, and then just making a smooth stroke.

Day 169 (18 Oct 24) - Friday men's scramble - only 10 playing today so it was two threesomes and one foursome (older guys and chilly weather don't mix too well).  Anyway - solid day overall (won both par 3 closest to the pins - helps when you are the only one to hit the green on both holes) and was part of the winning team in terms of overall score.   Wound up winning enough to cover my scramble fee and cart fee with a $1 to the good.  Overall the round was solid - 8 of 14 fairways hit, 7 of 18 GIR (nice to have that kind of ball striking day), putting was a little off as I had 4 three putts (for a total of 36putts - a few strokes here or there and it would have been a sub-80 round!)  The greens were super slick (the greenskeepers are shooting for rolling on glass...that was from the mouth of one of them), which means if you were putting downhill and missed the cup you may be looking at an even longer uphill come backer (had a couple myself).  Really getting comfortable with the short irons and wedge play.  The latter was super solid as I had a number of up and downs for par that were less than 5' for the putt.  A good day of golf.

Bunch of yard work, so I stayed home and did mirror work.

Day 170 (19 Oct 24) - Left foot really hurting in the ball area (this is the rebuilt area of my foot from the transmet amputation from the 2016 motorcycle wreck) as too much time on it causes bruising and painful steps.  Wanted to get some work in so I hit a few chippy 7i’s into the net (focused on setup and keeping a putting type swing) - really takes torque off the left foot.  Finished up with the 54 using the same technique. Again working to keep a putting motion in these short chips/pitches.

Day 19 - 2024-10-19

Hit balls for about 25 minutes afterward. A shank was not great for the thumb, but I moved it to the front side of the grip just to finish up hitting without impacting it much.

    • Day 280 - Played in a scramble today. Driver was back, but approach shots were not good. A lot to work on before Hawaii…mostly need to rehab my left elbow.

    • Yikes, that is not good for that golfer.  You are just asking for back issues doing rotation + side tilt + front tilt. Golfers naturally have degenerative disc issues if you practice and play long enough. Most people do in general, so it doesn't help. A desk job can cause issues. Still, doing all that extra side bend + torquing the back at such a high speed can't be good in the long term.  The evidence is out there right? Professional golfers with excessive side bend are going away from it because of back issues. I have no idea who thought of the idea that this was healthy. It is absurd. I will still say, this year has been the best for my back in a long time. More arms, less body for shallowing allowed me to play the most pain free. There was years were the next day for me after practice or playing is a crap shoot if my back would lock up or I would have some sort of nerve pain (sciatic).

But are we really going to pretend that this type of excess side bend is “healthy?” I’ve worked with people who speak about “health consequences” for things like banking the trail foot, and yet will continuously push young junior golfers into more and more and more side bend in efforts to “shallow” the club. These young pga tour players (if they want to keep playing) will almost certainly need to adjust their swing patterns later in their career to take some of the load off their spines. I feel as if that’s common sense. I don’t see a heck of a lot of thoracic side bend on the champions tour. Some, yes. Excess, no. Why not encourage a young junior into a pattern they can play with their entire lives? 🤷‍♂️
