Day 85: Went to the range and worked on my feel of opening my hips up more and getting my right arm closer to my body in the downswing. Also did a superspeed session.

Day 163

Worked on setup/posture and pre-shot routine today. Hit balls with 7-iron. Between each ball I walked away from my mat, set the club down, picked it up, walked back to the mat, went through pre-shot routine, focusing on posture and balance at setup, then hit the ball. Repeated about 20 times.

Did a bit of putter comparison between my Ping Anser from 1968 and somewhat recently purchased Odyssey Jailbird Mini (mallet esque). Kind of on the fence about mallet putters now, but will wait for lesson/fitting to move on anything.

Later goofed around trying to catch a flop shot.

Day 81 - Played 9 again today. Still trying to cure the hooks. Making some progress. An open range would really help!

Day 4 - Me and a buddy are gonna go through the Covid Practice Challenge, so I'm going to go through each day instead of getting stuck on day 1 indefinitely. That being said, today is Day 1.

Day 164

Dusted off my Skilz gold flex trainer club to warm up. Always feels like I’m stiff the first 10-15 balls.

Practiced with a 5-iron today because the sole of my 7-iron is worn from practicing with it 90% of the time.

Worked on making a good back swing, as I can feel some bad habits creeping into my motion.

Also did a superspeed workout. Need to look back through these posts to see when I started with the superspeed. Might be time to move to the next level.

Day 5 - Covid Practice Day 2. I'm also playing 9 this afternoon, where my focus will be eliminating fat shots. All this practice off a mat is messing with me.

Day 144 - May 21, 2020

Full swing work again. This is going to be almost everything that I do.

12 holes with the kiddo. She won $5 because she played 10-12 in even: bogey (tough hole), par (20 footer), birdie (par five).

Day 165

Warmed up a bit and then hit some balls with 7-iron. First 20 balls or so were awful, thin, toe strikes that stung my hands. Mosquitos were out to boot so I was getting pretty annoyed. I went inside, and did a little putting to chill out, and then did some swing mapping and realized I was focusing so much on not swaying my hips away from the ball (focus of my last lesson) that I wasn’t getting forward in the down swing. Moved to patio door and did some rehearsals in the “mirror“ and then braved the mosquitos for 10 more balls. Took post shot notes. Start line was good on all 10, a bit right of where I was aligned, which is normal for my draw ball flight. Contact was okay on 2 balls and good on 8, all on the grooves, and close enough to center for me (maybe not for Crossfield). The 2 okay balls were slightly thin, but not bladed.

Borrowed a friend’s Mevo and it’s definitely a good training aid in that it reminds you to compress the ball for distance as I tend to be more of a “sweeper” - it was fun

Day 145 - May 22, 2020

Full swing work again. This is going to be almost everything that I do.

Played 18. Need to get in a good range or indoor session SOON. Losing the feel for what I have to do. I think it's about width, though.

    • Standing a bit taller and closer to the ball seems to give me a better hand path. I feel like I can go harder at impact without losing my balance. Have missed only three fairways in the last two rounds, and it seems I may have picked up a yard or two compared to this time last year. I mean I'm doing good but now need to ensure I don't lose my grip change.
    • Day 22, May 26.  I'm at the office now, but this morning, before I left, I timed 15 minutes in the practice room, hitting 6-iron practice shots off the mat with the same routine as yesterday.
    • That's a good question;  I think I need to review my last several rounds and see where I tend to miss it.  I can recollect my last time there, I missed left, but that's because I remember where I nearly chipped in from. The thing is, my "default" trouble shots are low shots I can hit with a 7-iron for about 80 yards, a 5-iron for about 100, or a 4-hybrid for about 130, at least without elevation changes.  Now I wonder if I'm, say, 120 yards out from that green, if a low 5-iron that I'd otherwise use to advance the ball when I have a tree to stay under would work.  I have a casual round with some friends at that course this weekend, maybe I'll try that shot with an extra ball (I wouldn't try that during a tournament, of course, but a casual round I think it's okay to hit an occasional extra "I wonder what happens if" ball if I can do so without holding up play).  That having been said, I am going to have to allow for more draw or fade than before, and that makes sense.  I think I miss the green more left or right than short or long. Thank you!
    • Struggling a bit to wrist flex the right way to square the clubface. Right now, I can’t even exaggerate it enough to hook the ball around an alignment stick. The hip piece is a struggle as well. If I try to get the arm swing speed ramped up then I tend to have older patterns. Mix of either high right hip through impact, early extension. I can do arms down and right hip down more if I swing at like sub 70%. It’s not like I’m not trying to do the wrist stuff. My forearms got the workout today. 🤣 I would like to be able to swing 95% and not hit a big high push cut. It is such a weak shot.  I probably should have had the phone camera recording. I just wanted to see if I could hit push draws. I had the alignment stick up as a reference. I will look at some video tomorrow.
    • Question on realistic expectations.  I did a couple of quick google searches, one on "Average Club Head Speed of a 64 year old Amatuer" and one on a 64 year old Professional.  For the amatuer is indicated between 75-85 and for pros @ 105-112.  I am currently @ age 64, High HCP and @ 90mph.  I do not consider myself an above average golfer so I am a little shocked that I may be near the upper range for my age.  Are these stats accurate? I am hoping to get an increase in speed & distance, but if stats from Google are correct I am already a little above average for an amatuer my age so maybe improvement may be limited.  I plan to shoot for as much improvement as possible and am just curious what a reasonal expectation may be.
