Day 97 - worked on my swing again today with just the 6 iron. The whole practice felt crappy and I filmed it. Nothing felt right and contact wasn’t great. But the video actually looked like I was changing the picture a bit to where I want it. So I guess I was doing it right surprisingly.

Day 181

Played 18 today. Didn’t play very well but had a couple good runs of pars to break 90. A scratch player in my foursome pointed out I was collapsing my arms in the backswing, so I changed my swing thought and worked on backswing for the remainder of the round.

Got home and did a little mirror work with the same thought and also hit some balls.

Just started looking at this topic, what's the helicopter drill ?

Today I've done driver and 4 wood hitting a ball on a string for about 15mins, I also do a 5 different arm shoulder exercises using 1kg hand weights. I'm recovering from 11 weeks in hospital, I'm very lucky to be still hitting golf balls lol...

Day 182

Did more work on backswing. I sense my setup and backswing is getting sloppy. Most of my poor contact issues has been the result of this. Did 3-4 rehearsal backswings, and then hit a ball. Repeat.

Lesson tomorrow so I’ll have a better idea of what I need to focus on afterward.

Day 99 - Ranges opened again and I was able to spent some time on a few parts of my games.

  1. Started with partial shots which I have been pulling lately. Focused on set up an in to out feel. My last shot was a partial 8 iron aimed at this pitching net 120 out. “Nothing but net Baby!”
  2. Moved on to driver. My Evolvr instructor wanted me to work on face control but purposely trying to hit over draws and pushes by closing and opening the face. Didn’t those damn shots just go fricken straight where my body was aligned! WTF! It ended up being like the Club Face Control Challenge. I could really close the face and still hit a baby draw or open it way up and hit a slight push draw! How can I not do this on the course? I figured out that I was shifting the shaft lean back a bit at set up with the closed face without thinking about it or forward with the open face. I will try this again tomorrow.
  3. Tried it with the 3 wood too. Worked like a charm.
  4. Finished with short game work including sand shots. For sand, set up is key, but also making a long easier pitch swing. Will work more on that tomorrow too.

Day 162 - June 8, 2020

Hit some pretty solid shots while playing nine holes with Natalie (from her tees). Didn't hit the right clubs, just hit whatever I felt like hitting. Even flushed a nice 3I on the 9th. High.

Hit balls for five minutes before my lesson this morning, too.

A drill my Evolvr instructor gave me to work on my pivot. I just posted a video to my swing thread, but essentially you face a camera or mirror with a club across your shoulders, rotate your hips and shoulders to point the shaft at the camera or mirror, then bend down and point the shaft 3-4 outside of where your ball would be. Main things you’re looking for are a steady head and no hip swap.

Day 21 - Filmed the helicopter drill for my Evolvr instructor.

    • Standing a bit taller and closer to the ball seems to give me a better hand path. I feel like I can go harder at impact without losing my balance. Have missed only three fairways in the last two rounds, and it seems I may have picked up a yard or two compared to this time last year. I mean I'm doing good but now need to ensure I don't lose my grip change.
    • Day 22, May 26.  I'm at the office now, but this morning, before I left, I timed 15 minutes in the practice room, hitting 6-iron practice shots off the mat with the same routine as yesterday.
    • That's a good question;  I think I need to review my last several rounds and see where I tend to miss it.  I can recollect my last time there, I missed left, but that's because I remember where I nearly chipped in from. The thing is, my "default" trouble shots are low shots I can hit with a 7-iron for about 80 yards, a 5-iron for about 100, or a 4-hybrid for about 130, at least without elevation changes.  Now I wonder if I'm, say, 120 yards out from that green, if a low 5-iron that I'd otherwise use to advance the ball when I have a tree to stay under would work.  I have a casual round with some friends at that course this weekend, maybe I'll try that shot with an extra ball (I wouldn't try that during a tournament, of course, but a casual round I think it's okay to hit an occasional extra "I wonder what happens if" ball if I can do so without holding up play).  That having been said, I am going to have to allow for more draw or fade than before, and that makes sense.  I think I miss the green more left or right than short or long. Thank you!
    • Struggling a bit to wrist flex the right way to square the clubface. Right now, I can’t even exaggerate it enough to hook the ball around an alignment stick. The hip piece is a struggle as well. If I try to get the arm swing speed ramped up then I tend to have older patterns. Mix of either high right hip through impact, early extension. I can do arms down and right hip down more if I swing at like sub 70%. It’s not like I’m not trying to do the wrist stuff. My forearms got the workout today. 🤣 I would like to be able to swing 95% and not hit a big high push cut. It is such a weak shot.  I probably should have had the phone camera recording. I just wanted to see if I could hit push draws. I had the alignment stick up as a reference. I will look at some video tomorrow.
    • Question on realistic expectations.  I did a couple of quick google searches, one on "Average Club Head Speed of a 64 year old Amatuer" and one on a 64 year old Professional.  For the amatuer is indicated between 75-85 and for pros @ 105-112.  I am currently @ age 64, High HCP and @ 90mph.  I do not consider myself an above average golfer so I am a little shocked that I may be near the upper range for my age.  Are these stats accurate? I am hoping to get an increase in speed & distance, but if stats from Google are correct I am already a little above average for an amatuer my age so maybe improvement may be limited.  I plan to shoot for as much improvement as possible and am just curious what a reasonal expectation may be.
