Golf Etiquette - Yelling, etc.

If you have ever yelled at a group ahead of you....read this. First of all it is ignorant. We are all out there for fun.

Yesterday the group behind us yelled out “hurry up” and subsequently sent the Ranger out to “talk to us”. One of our group had a bad hole and we fell behind. It happens. Btw we finished our round in 3:50 hours.

Know that it is not appreciated and can result in even slower play if you actively attempt to push the group in front of you. If you want to play in less than 3 hours...tee off at 7am.

If your "fun" is impeding on someone else's "fun" then yelling - because maybe you're 200 yards away - might be required.

Not saying that applies to your specific situation, but a wholesale "no yelling" policy won't work, either. Do you agree?

I don’t think any “policy” will work. What I expect is civility and common sense.  Isn’t that a foundation of this game?? Last year I witnessed an event, between an 85 year old male and a 50ish year old male, that could have ended up in serious charges had the younger man actually acted on his emotions.

It's also important to remember that 99% of the time, civility and common sense are exactly what we get.

I have very rarely heard anyone get yelled at, but if it happens it is usually not because of one bad hole. If you are holding up a group, and there is open space in front of you, it doesn't matter if you finish in under four hours. Let the faster group through. Yelling might be poor etiquette, but so is not allowing a faster group to play through.

People can be so brave from 200 yards. I would have called them through on the next hole when they came past ask if there is an issue and then watch as they play bad shots

Civility is the norm. When its not, I've seen far more incidents of hitting into people than yelling.

The only acceptable thing to yell on a golf course: "Fore!"

Ive seen people whistle and wave to a slow group's attention, but i dont think I've ever witness someone from one group outright yelling at another for any reason since I've been playing golf.

Yelling (in frustration or because one is frustrated or whatever) is juvenile and stupid.  Come up and politely ask to play through before you cross that line.  They were childish and rude..

It can be extremely frustrating to watch a group flounder in the fairway in front of you. That being said there may be better ways of handling it than yelling. Like I talked about on another thread recently, if someone is in your way and you are a faster group then play through them. It's customary to be asked to play through, but some people are clueless. Sometimes you just have to ask to play through and not take no for an answer. Either way playing through will definitely go smoother if you haven't previously yelled at them from the fairway.

Yelling on the golf course is not proper, unless it;s at your ball for going in the wrong direction that's almost a reflex anyway. Yelling at the group in front of you is improper. You should wait until the next tee and ask to play thru.
