I know @iacas already recommended a bit of it and I think I didn't already post this. I finally got to listen to the whole thing, and it was a great listen. Lots of great stories on how he came up on the tour, the Ryder Cup, the swing, etc... He made an interesting point on video that I thought of too. He said it's been 40 years since we had video and there are still so many different swings out there. People thought video would make everyone swing the same (yeah, there are niches, say around a popular instructor), but it didn't, there still are lots of different swings out there, I posted a Golfweek piece on two D1 swings that don't look "standard".

Second this. The stories about his matches with Seve in the Ryder Cup were amazing. And apparently they recorded so much that there's going to be a second pod before the US Open.

Sweater folding class was a joke right? Can't tell with sarcasm these days.

Yes and no. The PGA teaches you a lot of dumb things.

You mentioned it in a previous post, about what it takes to be a certified PGA (of America) pro. You said you had to learn a lot about Mercerized cotton. I'm surprised you've forgotten.

No, I didn't. Jim did, it turns out, but not me:

But I guess you answered the question. So thanks.

Yes, you have to learn a lot of stupid stuff. Back then, PGA Tour guys were able to become PGA members. They were under the "Tour Player" category. Right now it's A-3: https://www.pga.com/pga-america/pga-information/pga-america-member-classifications.

Anyway, back then, you had to take a few dumb classes as well as being exempt on the PGA Tour, in order to play on the Ryder Cup team. Some PGA Tour players would take a few more classes and become full PGA members, like head pros or directors of instruction, too. It was easier to get into the PGA back then if you were a Tour player. Now they're still PGA members, but they aren't gifted membership after they lose PGA Tour status quite as easily.

P.S. "Sweater folding" is a standard inside joke among PGA type guys.

Ha ha, when you mentioned pod. I was thinking RC.

So is mercerized cotton the "rich corinthian leather" of golf? 😜

Oh yeah, the other thing Azinger said that stood out to me about the swing was this: We are all feel players.

No. Corinthian was a made-up word. Mercerization is an actual process that, I believe, increases the luster of a cotton shirt (I think it makes it shinier).

I had never heard of NLU until a few days ago when I saw this thread.  I grabbed both the Azinger episode and the recent Broadie episode;  listed to Broadie first, on the way to my round yesterday;  finished Azinger toay.  Great podcasts, both of them.  I remember when Azinger was captain of Ryder Cup, but I wasn't aware his book came out or what his mechanism is, I just remember he had a system he hinted at.  I like the way he gave Voight-Kampff tests to determine who to pair with who for the pods.

Very interesting, will keep an eye out for this podcast going forward.  Any past episodes in particular I should check out, time permitting?

I usually listen after a big tournament, like the majors. They also talk about courses, like Bandon Dunes recently.

I like almost all of the podcasts that they do. I generally don't listen to the travel podcasts, though.

If you're looking to go back, here are some podcasts that I would recommend listening to, even now:

  1. All of the podcasts with Rory. Rory is great.
  2. Jim Furyk's podcast from last November was really good.
  3. Bones' podcasts are also really good.
  4. If you're at all interested in the LPGA, Mike Whan's podcast was great.

Those are the best past ones off the top of my head.

    • Hi @RetiredOldMan!  I am glad to see you are still playing and having good scores.  I hope that when I am 79, I am not only able to play, but still able to produce as good scores as you have been doing.   I look forward to hearing more of your success and your opinion of the senior flex shafts.
    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.
