Hi there! I recently inherited a set of golf clubs and bag but the problem is I've only played once in my life and barely know the first thing about golf!
I was thinking this may be a good opportunity to start playing as there are quite a few courses around my city of Victoria, BC, Canada, but I'm also wondering if someone could help me get an approximate value on them!

They are:
Founders Club Fresh Metal Plus 24 degrees, and 21 degrees
Founders Club Deep Undercut Cavity 5, 6, 8, and 9
Founders Club P
Tour Mission Extreme putter
North Western 1 and 3

All are in pretty good shape and come in a bag and one has a little protector.
Does anyone know if these are worth anything??

Many thanks!
Alex

I know the northwestern clubs are worth nothing. Usually if you have a few cheapo clubs in the bag, everything else is probably worth very little.

The whole set including the bag are worth approx. $20 American.

Most old and even rare clubs don’t have much value unless they have some significant history/celebrity attachment to them.

I agree with what has been said. The clubs have little monetary value. Founders Club was an OK brand in its day-late 70's early 80's if I recall.

The Northwestern 1 and 3 are woods I presume? Are they made of wood or metal?

As far a utility for a starter set, they should do fine. You will want to pick up a more modern 3 wood and or driver.

Thanks so much all for the info! Since they're worth next to nothing this will be a great opportunity to try my hand at the game. I just found there's a driving range a 10 minute walk from my house :)

all the best,

Alex

That's probably the best use for them. Old clubs, like @Vinsk said, typically don't have any value, at least from a monetary standpoint. The value in them is taking them out the range, using them, and seeing if golf is something you might enjoy.

It actually looks like this is an off-brand that has or had produced clubs over many years.

Like the guys have indicated, no real up market. What you can get for them would depend on how recent they are as well as the condition. Some of the later versions may well be something a beginning golfer could do well with. The older stuff maybe not so much.

This looks like a fairly recent 3W that somebody starting off could do ok with.

This seems to be a much older 3W that I'd steer clear of.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
