Just out of curiosity, what ever happened to those golf balls that had a number of different sized dimples with some sort of hexadedrin (sp) shapes?  I do not remember the maker, might have been Maxfli.  Surely, only a marketing ploy at the time, but have not seen them for quite some time.

Many golf balls have differently sized dimples arranged in all sorts of patterns.

Callaways have the hex dimple pattern, where TP5s are more oblong with what appear to be slightly larger ridges between dimples and ProV1s are closer to a circle with lower ridges

I recall getting burned in a Trivial Pursuit game some years back.  The question was "How many dimples are there on a golf ball?"  I requested another question after explaining that there was no specific, mandated, number of dimples on a golf ball.  I got voted down, guessed something, and lost my turn.  The answer on the back of the card was, I believe, either 364 or 368.

I think that question has been on Jeopardy or something, too. I agree, it's a bad question.

the one I recall had some tiny dimples mixed with medium sized to traditional (whatever that means). They also referred to the dimples being "truncated".  No matter, trivial, I was only curious.

As I noted, even the Pro V1 has different sized dimples. Look at the pictures; most balls have different sized dimples on them.

Never counted them, but the e7s I use have 320+ dimples, with a dimple, with in a dimple pattern.

I wonder if they could market them as having 640+ dimples....lol.

I do remember some golf balls with hexagonal-shaped dimples, with a flat (truncated cone) bottom.  I think they were indeed from Maxfli, maybe some time in the 1980's, but its a long time ago.  And now, actually using my Google machine, I see that the truncated cone dimples were Wilson ProStaff, but they were round.  The only hex-shaped dimples I can find are from Royal

yah, that sounds about right.  They were a brand name, and IIRC one of the original orange balls at the time. I remember them making a big thing out of the hexahedron shape or something. Not unlike the photos shown in above posts, just different pattern. Pretty sure they may have been Maxfli and it would have been in the 80's. Thanks.

  • iacas changed the title to Maxfli DDH II Balls

As I noted, even though other balls have different sized dimples, this one has a unique pattern.

All balls have patterns. In fact that’s one of the things you can protect to ensure the pattern is unique.
