I started in the early 1980's with a hand-me-down set of irons that had leather grips and dark-colored shafts. I am sure that they were the best money could buy back in the day. My grandfather was a Kansas City, KS champ and played in the 1935 US Open at Oakmont. He had a set of Kenneth Smith woods that I remember him playing with.

I sure hope you kept those!!!

Those would be sweet to clean up and just display in an office

I play ping eye 2 irons that average 4-6 degrees of weaker loft. I may hit 2 more clubs than you but I know the new irons have tricked up lofts. I played 9 holes with a buddy today. He has callaway apex fitted irons. A 600 dollar driver. 2 woods he paid 400 bucks apiece for. And a 300 buck putter.   My bag clubs and putter are 30 years old. I beat him by 4 strokes. Sometimes it’s the Indian not the arrows!

This is the second time you've said this are you trying to elicit a response? We are all very impressed you are playing old irons although my blades are only 1° stronger than your eye 2s.

  • iacas changed the title to High Handicap Player Using Low Handicap Irons!

As a low handicap player, i play with Titleist Ap1, the most forgiving irons from the brand. I hit a lot of misshits so playing with them it´s better for my scorecard at the end of the day.

Low handicap irons feel amazing when striked rigth, but when not they let u know rigth away with a really bad shot.
This is a game where the most important thing is how much the bad shots are so i think everyone should play game improvement irons with a few exceptions like Pro or scratch players.

    • Par is just a guideline, a reference for a hole or a course. At the end of the tournament the player that took less strokes to hole out is the winner, no matter how much it is against the Par of the course.  35 under par is not desirable? then change a few holes par.. make all reachable par 5's as par 4's.  Every hole below 350 is a par 3.. This will make those 7200 courses play "harder" with a par of 66..67.  (Ridiculous, let's just appreciate the amazing game this players have).
    • Didn't Mike Souchak (and possibly others as I'm just going by memory, but I'm pretty sure Souchak was first) shoot a 257 years ago?  It wasn't on a par 73, so it wasn't 35 under, but still.
    • I like Golf Pad app.  I do pay a little per year for the premium version.
    • Sounds like you're trying to prune gorse.  Seems as if gorse can actually throw its needles at anyone nearby!
    • BTW - The bush was ugly.  Anyway, in an attempt to add some clarity the ball was under some of the branches of the bush. But the bush was shaped in such a way where a left handed player could have played the shot without hitting any of the branches. A right handed player would have no chance. Thus my buddy/opponent I think was "reasonable" in addressing the ball with a flipped over 7 iron as he could have hit it lefty. .... There was, however, no guarantee that he would get good results as I've actually never seen him try to hit a ball in that manor in all the years I've played with him.
