  1. My current home course is a reasonably open place that keeps its rough fairly short, so lost balls aren't as much of a problem as they'd be other places. Typically, I will help look any time it is reasonably practical to do so. If I went left and he went right, that might be a situation where it isn't practical.
  2. One thing I fell victim to this weekend is the guy that picks up your ball. I don't know why these people just assume any ball is abandoned when there are so many hacks like me on the course. It's hardly an unusual thing for someone's tee shot to find the rough of the hole you are playing.
  3. Been putting off cutting the grass. Good news is the air is a little better today. Bad news is its going to be 91 with storms over the weekend and that means mowing is the priority today. Golf may not happen for a bit.
  4. Characters besides myself ... One of my regular playing partners is a guy I've nicknamed "The Mayor of Miami Shores." It's a public course so a lot of different people play there, but if you've been there more than a handful of time times this guy probably knows you. I do like the man, but he can get carried away talking to people. We'll be waiting on the first tee and he'll still by on the clubhouse porch gabbing away. He'll see someone on the course while we are halfway down the fairway and go over to talk. When he finally stops, we are on the green and he still has a fairway wood in his hands.
  5. It's been a limited, but disgraceful start to the year for me, but finally got a couple of birds over the weekend to bring me up to 3. Killed a drive on the short-par 4 No. 6 and hit a decent chip to set up the tap in. Two days later, I made a 35-footer uphill on the par-3 No. 7 from the fringe that went center-cup. It's nine holes only per outing for me so far this year and I've only been on the back nine one time all year. I'll figure it good enough if I manage to cover the front by year's end.
  6. It would probably work a lot better if he's just go by Wyndy for short.
  7. Ok. But a lot of golf has been played that is consistently not good. The people that play it are under no illusions. It's probably different in the UK, but in my part of the world, the pandemic seems to have cost us the scrubby, daily fee courses that allowed a lot of lower-income people to play the game. These were never places "consistently good" golfers would even bother with. For a guy with maybe a $30 entertainment budget for the day, those courses were perfect. He could take those garage-sale golf clubs to the course, hide a couple of pints of cheap beer in the bag and have enough left over for the greens fee. Seems like all those marginal courses have shutdown around here. The marginally-financed players have nowhere to go.
  8. Sloppy work to be sure. This is usually the kind of thing some mom & pop operation gets stomped on for. The big boys usually hire the specialists to make sure they are in the clear.
  9. It's really just going to depend on the course and what standard they want to set if any. If a course is going to be serious about a dress code, they would be well-advised to post it fairly clearly on their website. For instance, Yankee Trace is a municipal course in my area, but a fairly fancy one. Centerville is the sort of place that demands red brick for its gas stations. It probably takes to much digging on their web page to find it, but it shows: Dress Code To protect the rights and privileges of all persons at Yankee Trace, proper attire must be always worn on the golf course and on the practice facilities from April 1st through October 31st. Golf Course: Work jeans, bathing attire, t-shirts, gym and tennis shorts, cut-offs and short shorts, tank tops, halter tops, and other similar dress are inappropriate. Recommended length of shorts is Bermuda length, approximately 3 inches above the knee. Collared or mock neck shirts are required. Practice facilities: Bathing attire, cut-offs and short shorts, tank tops, halter tops, and other similar dress or offensive language/logos on clothing are inappropriate. Recommended length of shorts is Bermuda length, approximately 3 inches above the knee. Any guest not in compliance with this policy may be restricted from use of the facilities until properly attired. Ready-to-wear shirts, pants, and shorts are available for sale in the golf shop. Centerville doesn't do short shorts.
  10. Miguel Angel Jimenez.
  11. It is truly jaw-dropping. Fella was also quoted this way about a year ago: "And I would ask any player that has left or any player that would consider leaving, have you ever had to apologize for being a member of the PGA Tour?"
  12. Going to take some big brass ones for Monahan to face the music this afternoon. Hope lunch agrees with him today. Be a shame to go home sick now. Those guys are probably about to shred him.
  13. That's probably the most significant thing there.
  14. Awesome. More team golf. I'm gonna to try to get a team put together. Maybe call em the Louisville Lipouts. Or Lips for short. Maybe some kind of logo that combines a mouth with a golf hole.
  15. Yeah. Definitely wouldn't think many would pick Pietrangelo out. Spend most of his career bouncing back and forth from the minors and the NHL before he headed overseas, but he saved Pittsburgh's bacon in 1991 against the Devils after Tom Barrasso got hurt.
  16. Playing 162-game seasons does make it pretty hard to care about your average Royals-A's regular contest. That's not new. I don't think most people have ever spent a lot of time watching teams that they don't follow. I'll confirm for you that if it isn't the Reds, I really don't care and never did. The whole NBA thing pretty much misses me, but football at the NFL or very top college levels is different. There's a lot more weight behind each game. So as an Ohio State fan (for instance), that Bama game in October can take on huge importance. The NFL is in a rather particular place, in part, because it lends itself very well to gambling. Personally, I hold the line there at low-stakes fantasy football, but it makes every single NFL game significant. Anyway, I wasn't really originally thinking we were making a distinction between NFL football and college football, which is why I questioned it.
  17. Ok. So football and football hold down two spots.
  18. Maybe it depends on the metrics you are using, but is baseball really fourth in the U.S.? Yes, football and basketball are surely over it.. What is third if it isn't baseball? Soccer? Also, I'm not real sure the tag "regional" is fair unless you are using a global context. Are there many places in the United States where baseball is no longer played?
  19. There can and should be a difference in the criteria we use for our "Mount Rushmore" versus what we might consider for GOAT. With GOAT we probably do tend to think of it in terms of sheer performance. That would naturally tip things towards more modern-day athletes. Popularity and impact on their sport and maybe, in some cases, the world in general probably ought to be bigger factors for Mount Rushmore. Who are the guys that some housewife halfway across the world has heard of? These are the sort of names I think of: Ali, Jordan, LeBron, Babe Ruth, Pele. Gretzky, Jackie Robinson and Tiger Woods.
  20. Like @ChetlovesMer, it is the never ending debate that some people love to engage in. It is probably reasonable to think that closer-to-modern-day athletes have both a lot of competitive advantages over the more historical standouts, but also a lot more high-level competition at the same time. The field that Nicklaus, Palmer and Hogan won all those titles against isn't the same sort of field that Tiger dominated. Jordan and his Bulls had to win their 6 titles against tougher competition that what Russell and the 60's Celtics ever had to face. ... Less of a boxing authority, so I could be wrong, but I think it can be argued that Ali's competition was tougher than Rocky's. I think the spirit of the question is more about who is on your personal Mt. Rushmore. Not really who the Greatest of All Time is.
  21. You are the customer. It is only natural that your golf pro should expect feedback. Tell him what you want to be getting out of your lessons.
  22. I find your suggestion that rules shouldn't matter in beer league completely off base. They exist for our safety.
  23. "The last time"? Is that a promise?
  24. You are out there a little bit aren't you. On the bright side, the Big Beaver is according to their website ... GOLF DAY 2022 Top 60 Ohio Public Course and #1 Chillicothe/Waverly area Golf Course. Whoever Golf Day is.
