  1. I have this complaint in my league some nights, we're not using ESC and so some people have an 18+ handicap for 9 holes. Giving 2 strokes on half or more of the holes makes it nearly impossible to win a match in my experience. All they have to do is bogey a few holes and you're in trouble, if they par a couple then you're really screwed!
  2. I'm finally hitting the ball consistently enough that I felt comfortable renting a Trackman for an hour to get some stats on my clubs. $45 for the hour and then the teaching pro there went through a few things with me for 10m. Pretty awesome experience, I highly recommend it! I'm curious what everyone else thinks if you're interested in commenting. Here was his feedback: 1. Driver is pretty good, 8.5/10. If I could zero out my attack angle, probably gain 20y off the tee. 2. Irons not very good, 4/10. Buying even a used set would let me hit 2 clubs down (e.g. 7I now, 9I with new clubs) on every shot. 3. 7I/8I, wow spin is insanely high! He had me hit a demo 7I and spin on that was 6,000 which he liked better. I shoot in the mid-80s pretty consistently, finally broke 80 yesterday for the first time ever (79) on a 68/117 course at 6,000 yards. The driver distances from Trackman match what I get from Golfshot on the course. Irons were about 10 yards shorter than the distances I play on the course, has anyone had issues with Trackman under-reporting carry distance or am I off on my course distances? Anyway, data is attached and thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to review and comment. Covert is at 11.5 neutral, SLDR S is 12 and 5W is an RBZ Stage 2 set at 16.5. 56 and 60 wedges are Vokey SM4s, irons are generic cavity-backed from 25 years ago.
  3. This is much better than those cheesy "My sister makes $100/hr working from home" SPAM comments typically seen on-line.
  4. I was off work last week and got completely addicted to the women's tournament, but never watched a LPGA event in my life! I was up past 1a watching Baylor win their semifinal, and then the final was incredible as well. Match play is so much fun and the college golfers make just enough mistakes to keep things really interesting.
  5. And his irons aren't numbered, they just have the lofts printed on them. That seems like a good idea to me, make it easier to compare clubs and prevent manufacturers from gaming distances. I'm not sure on the lengths though, I assume there's a valid reason that loft and length move in opposite directions for a standard set of clubs but then it also makes sense that hitting the same length club would improve consistency then loft would change the distance on each club.
  6. I think you're a dying breed, but I could never hit a driver straight until roughly a month ago :) I had an old Burner from 2000 for the longest time, could never hit it straight. Could never hit my driver in HS in the early 90s straight either, and it was just a bit larger than my current 18* 5W. I bought a cheap Covert 2.0 off EBay last Summer and I'm finally hitting it straight after a year of practice. I can feel when I hit it off the toe, but it still goes straight and I only lose about 25 yards of distance. I can hit my old Burner straight now too, not sure on distance though I haven't compared them at the range because I'm never going back to that Burner. The bigger head on the Covert gives me more room for error. If I could hit it off the sweet spot every swing then I might not care, but I'm a weekend golfer and just can't swing that consistently. Just bought a used 12* SLDR S for $75 off EBay last week in fact, to give myself a backup driver and see if maybe I can get even more consistency out of a fixed-head club with a little more loft (Covert is at 11.5*).
  7. Has anyone gotten a Dick's/GG golf mailer recently? I got a couple in March/April, Clay was in both modeling Nike and UA polos.
  8. The fans paid their money, as long as they're not completely out of control or belligerent (on the course, screaming during the swing or hurling insults), I think the pros should deal with it. I like Spieth, but holy cow how lame is it that he can't focus enough to overcome a camera click? How much do these guys need to be coddled, this isn't a bridge tournament at the local VFW! I've never understood that attitude from the pros, you're playing in front of thousands of people that paid to watch you play golf. Part of the gig is dealing with the noise and distractions that come with those people and they're money. No different than any other spectator sport.
  9. I've been thinking more about this recently and I'm starting to come around to this way of thinking. I'm kind of an impatient person, so my tendency is to rush but I have started to realize that constantly feeling rushed sucks the fun out of the game. You can't even enjoy a shot because you're hauling ass to hit the next shot. At the same time, I find it incredibly annoying to watch a group hit shots from one side of the fairway to the other and take 15m to finish a hole. I can walk the local public course by me in just over 2.5 hours on my own and I've played a round with a cart and one other person in about 2 hours. I can move fast, I'm just not sure that should be my sole focus all of the time.
  10. 4I at the right edge of the house, SW to the center of the green.
  11. I once played with a guy that brought a boombox on his cart and blasted music the entire round, that was really annoying. I'm "rangefinder guy" with my phone GPS, sometimes wonder if that annoys people.
  12. Has anyone used the "mini" drivers from Taylor Made, that seem to be the "best of both worlds" which someone mentioned earlier in this thread? The're higher lofted with a 43.5" shaft, but have a bigger head than a typical 3W. I saw something for the new AeroBurner Mini, but then it mentioned they did a "mini" for the SLDR too. Might be a good middle ground, but I've never hit one.
  13. I take that to mean thinking too much about the mechanics of the swing and placement of the club during the actual swing. I found myself in that situation for a while last fall, and it wrecked my swing for a period of time. I watched and read a bunch of stuff on the different "positions" within the swing and where the shaft/head should be in each, then started thinking about where my club was at each position during my swing. It was a mess, I completely lost control of my swing for about 2 months. My only 100+ round of the year was during that time! Switching to just 2 feelings during the swing has helped me immensely. I want it to feel like I'm dragging the club head straight back from the ball and I want to feel like I'm stretching out my arms until the shaft is parallel to the ground. It was a miracle "fix," went back to shooting in the 80s!
  14. I love this thread, thanks for sharing details and I hope you keep posting your tournament rounds! I saw there's a GolfWeek circuit here in Ohio that starts in 2 weeks, I might try a few events this summer! Obviously they let you use GameGolf on the course, are you allowed to use GPS as well?
  15. Help me out here, I've visited every page on the site and can't figure out how to enter details from a round of golf? How do I enter my scores?
  16. I used GN a half dozen times last year, but the first time I would play a course from a GN booking that course would go all-out to make sure I knew about their website and the ability to book tee times from there without the service charge. And the prices on the course's website were always the same or better than what GN listed.
  17. I used Golfshot last year for the first time ever, found it reliable and easy to use on the course. Stats work great but their website is pretty lame, at least by 2015 standards. The annual renewal is coming up, was curious if anyone has tried the new GolfNow GPS and shot tracking app that came out late last year? I can't seem to find much information or screenshots on the GPS and stats part of the app on either the GN website or the app's page for Android. If you've tried it, would love to hear thoughts. If you're familiar with Golfshot, would love to hear which you like better and why.
  18. I would expect that putts are not well correlated with scores because average number of putts is very tightly grouped no matter the skill-level. PGA pros stick their approach shots close and 2-putt for par, hack golfers stick chips close then 2-putt for 7s. Very different scores, same # of putts. Most (maybe all) of the counting stats you have listed can be tracked pretty easily with a $30 app on your phone. I've been waffling on Game Golf for over a year now, to track the distance and dispersion stuff. I'm a huge stats geek, but I question whether I can actually make use of the information that would come out of a product like Game Golf. The disconnect for me is, there's no stats on the range (unless you can afford to buy/rent a TrackMan type device). So maybe I see something in my stats from Game Golf, but I can't actively work on fixing it at the range and see real-time results. So all that is to say, I'm curious how you see yourself using all of this data to get better?
  19. I still play with the only set of irons I've ever owned, cavity-back Ping knock-offs purchased in 1991. I had them extended a 1/2" and re-gripped last year, now that the kids are old enough I can get out of the house to play a round here and there. Feels like I should buy a new set, but I'm cheap and not sure what benefits I would get from a new set? They're higher lofted than today's irons, my PW is at 51 for example whereas it seems the typical PW today is 45-48.
  20. Been working to hit my driver consistently all season, crushed one 284 (according to GolfShot) down the left side of a fairway in mid-October. Felt awesome!
  21. For me it's all about gaps in distance. I hit my driver 240-250, I have a 5W that I dialed down to 15 degrees that I can carry 220 so I never bothered to get a 3W as an example. If I can get my driver up to 260 consistently, then I'll probably look at adding a 3W. If you have a big gap between driver and the hybrid or 4I, then you could look into a club to fill that gap. If you don't have any gaps, don't waste money on clubs you don't need IMHO.
  22. Well said and agree 100%. Here in Ohio I can play a round for under $30 at a variety of courses that are well-maintained. Used clubs are cheap on EBay. Real incomes have been dropping since the late 90s, we've been living in a perpetually under-performing economy for the past 6 years. And if you look at Japan's experience since the 80s, it's questionable if that will change anytime soon. I do think though that options requiring less time would boost the game. Not saying it was easier 15 yrs ago but if you want to counteract the economic issues I think time (both length and variance) is the biggest "problem" with golf right now. With middle-school aged kids I can safely go out for ~3 hrs without catching hell from the wife, but unless I'm one of the first tee times there's just no guarantee of how long a round will take. Could be 3.5, could be 5+ which would be a disaster for me when I got home.
  23. I don't know how long it takes to tape the show, but if you're really serious it's probably not worth the time away from practice unless you win the whole thing. I think Anthony knew there was water, because right after he hit it he said essentially "Carry! boy I don't know if it has enough"
  24. I don't think he had to carry the water, it looked to me like his hybrid was actually 10 yards long of the pin. He just pulled it left a bit into the water. You could tell he was terrified of Emily and over-thought that last hole, because he did not want to go into a playoff. From his comments prior to the shot, he didn't see that she had no good place to stand for that shot. She was 150 out hitting 2 and birdie would have been pretty easy if her ball had stopped a yard short of where it did or if she'd been left-handed. He feared an eagle which wasn't out of the realm of possibility given what he knew but he even said it after the shot; "make her actually eagle."
