Tiger has been a major influence on my life... he's a hero of mine who I've followed since his US Jr Amateur days (back when I was in like elementary and middle school). I even worked for his foundation, and he has been important for my life as a fellow non-white golfer (people who want to respond to that negatively, relaaaax, I'm not liberal or very PC either but Tiger's skin color is a huge aspect of his positive impact)

However, for the sake of competition and the underdog, I just can't really root for him these days.. yet I'm amazed at how many people do. I guess it's something very subjective.

When Baddeley had that eagle putt on Saturday I was crossing my fingers hoping he'd beat Tiger.... and I felt for him when he lost. Anyone else share this perspective?

Man, Tiger is a once-in-a-lifetime athelete. He's awesome/incredible/insertsuperlativehere - I LOVE watching him play. I love watching him win. But he doesn't need me to root for him. So I usually don't. That said the few times I've seen him lose - I'm always a little disappointed.

I normally root for the underdog, h owever when Tiger is up there I'm pulling for him. Maybe because Golf is an individual sport, and it's all Tiger, whereas with say baseball a team like the BoSox can just buy the best team, so I root for the unerdog there.
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

It depends upon the situation for me. When he's doing something spectacular (like leading the US Open by 10), I root for him to go further. When someone is really threatening him, I root for them. He certainly doesn't need any more money and he's going to get all the wins most people expect. I just can't believe it's good for the game when guys like Baddely lose in that fashion. He would have been an instant star. More stars is good.

Best, Mike Elzey

I root for Tiger because the things he does are simply magical. He is also a positive role model, so it is easy to root for him.

As fanboyish as this sounds, I'm just glad that I have been able to watch the first half of his amazing career play out. I barely missed out on Michael Jordan's domination in basketball. My memories of him have been watching him try baseball and the second un-retirement.

let's put it this way...would a JB Holmes vs. Cink final been anything worth talking about today?

That's why I root for Tiger...he provides more to talk about. Hardly anyone talked about last year's final after about a day. they will be talking about Tiger's 46 under par weekend for awhile. People like watching greatness and with him winning, that's what we get.

I dont necessarily root for tiger because its an individual sport (I CANT STAND ROGER FEDERERERERERER)...i root for tiger because its one against all (with the exception of match play, ryder/president's cup, etc). When one player is able to be in contention almost EVERY TIME against a 100+ field of the top pros in the world, there's something special...

I'm beginning to believe Tilghman's comment about how in the future, modern science might be able to dissect or read people's minds (i forget how it was worded) and find out that tiger's mental capacity enabled him to lip out his competitor's putts (and make his go center of cup). I laughed when that was said.

I have a couple of golfers that I like because of the way they play, their swing and interaction with the fans. That said, I always root for Tiger to make a great shot, hoping that I see something new, something great or perhaps, something that I may be able to try.

Watching Sunday, I saw him hit a 320 yard cut with a 3 wood. Granted, they were almost 3000 feet above elevation but it was beautiful to watch.

I'm rooting for some competition...

me too. i love how he is bringing people to the sport, but i would like to see a tournement that he is contending in, and people actually THINK THEY HAVE A SHOT TO SHOOT BETTER THAN 80. Mr. Badds! competition would be fabulous

I root for Tiger but like many have said, I root for the competition to give us an exciting tournament.

Last years Deutsche Bank was a perfect example...Tiger vs. Phil down the stretch. I was actually rooting for Phil, only for that reason.

I root for Tiger every time he plays. I have been a fan since he started on the tour. It would be nice for some competition though. Its sad that the other young players cannot get anything going against him. If they do one week they fade the next. It just goes to show you how dominating he is.

I lose intrest when Tiger is even playing an event now. I like watching the Champions Tour or reruns of the old rounds in the 60's and 70's because for the most part it's more exiting and closer competition. Also they just seem to have more fun playing the game.

So with Tiger I just get sick of watching him completely hand everyone else's asses back to them and watching the media just bow down to everything he does.

Tiger's a great guy and all, but when he's leading by 10 strokes that's when I change the channel. It's just not exciting when everyone else is playing for second and nobody stands up to him.

Now, that duel with Bob May at Valhalla was another matter... That's the sort of golf I prefer to watch, not see how badly some guy beat the rest of the field. It's the equivalent of the NY Giants playing a peewee team and rooting to see how many points Eli can rack up in sixty minutes. Champion's Tour, Nationwide, and LPGA are more interesting these days (especially the latter). And the classics of Palmer, Snead, Hogan, Nicklaus, Norman, etc...

That got me thinking: I am also an underdog fan. But I am die hard for Tiger -- who clearly isn't one. I am really ticked when he loses. I guess after all I read and continue to read and watch, I just appreciate the work that he has done, and continues to do to improve. He is a testament to hard work, that's for sure. I feel like he deserves to win, and I want him to.

I know how good Tiger is. I know how great he is. The guy is amazing. Incredible. I completely respect him as a golfer.

But I don't root for him like I did for Nicklaus, or Trevino, back in the day.

Tiger is just cold, and robotic. I don't bond with him. I'd rather root for a human.

Rooting for Tiger is like rooting for Microsoft, or Standard Oil, or AT&T.;

What's not to like about Tiger? Talk about a guy calling shots.....without calling the shot!

Everyone on the tour is scared of him. Afraid to feel embarassed about a big loss....yep, usually a big loss.

HONESTLY....who is an entertaining golfer?
