Im an 8.1 Handicap, golfing at a course with a 69.3/122 Rating. I usually shoot Low 80's to High 70's but usually compared to some other golfers on this forum with the same handicap: it seems bad.

In your handicap range, what do you consider shooting well. And what should I be shooting for my handicap. Or am i around the correct range?

At the risk of sounding too simple I will answer this way.

Basically handicap is how many shots on average you shoot over par. Then a arithmetical equation kicks in according to the slope and rating.

I'm a 9, but I usually shoot 10 to 15 over par on my home course that has a rating of 73.80, and a slope of 140.

I think that's what Dent wanted before he passed out, but had enough presence of mind to hit the submit button.

I would qualify shooting well is anything in the 70's. Shooting 80 or 81 is below my cap, but really burns me.

I finished the season last year at an 18.1 hdcp and "Shooting Well" for me would be anything under 90. I shot an 89 (with 41 putts) and an 87 last year and I felt like I was playing well. Obviously not putting well though...

I'm about a 32. 100-105 is a decent, though disappointing day for me.

90anything and I'm on top of the world for the rest of the day.

With my 34 handicap, I'd say anything in the low 100's for me would be awesome. I've been averaging around 115 with a high of 128 since I started keeping track of my handicap.

This thread DELIVERS!!! Did you fall asleep on your keyboard or something?

Sounds like I missed some funny

One of my more regular courses is 69.9/122 par 71 and I am thinking break 80 every time I start. I don't consider it a good score unless it's under 82, but that's because I know the course well and should be able to score here. I am a 10.0 and dropping. my last few scores at that course dating back to early last year which I started as a 13 capper... 80 84 78 78 85 79 86 87 85 90 81

For a 10 cap, that is pretty good aiming for under 80 everytime. Thats what I usually do, But im lower so I have a feeling im not really living up to it and may be higher than I am.

22.1 handicap at time of posting. Anything south of 95 and I'm happy, anything south of 100 but north of 94 and I'm feeling OK; triple digits start to worry me unless it's the first time I've played the course.

Shooting well for me is even par or better. If I break 74 I am happy though. This year my cap will drop due to the course that I will be playing on. Par 72 but my average round will probably be around 70.

Anything under 90 is good. I'm not nearly as consistent as I'd like, and the courses slopes are 134 and 137 (with average being 113, IIRC).

I think shooting well is any time you beat your handicap. That means you are improving. Your handicap goes lower, you beat it again, you go lower and lower. You get better.

There is also playing well. Playing a round of golf where perhaps your score wasn't so hot, but you hit a lot of quality shots. I've found that happening to me a bit lately.

I would much rather shoot well, over play well though... I played 36 holes today. Shot 6 over then 5 over at a club I've played only a few times. 11 over for 36 holes was definitely not what I had in mind when I woke up this morning, but, I did hit a ton of quality shots. The greens were aerated, that's my excuse!

keep in mind that where I aim and what I shoot are two different things. Also, that's for that particular course which as I said is a 69.9/122 par 71, and I know the course pretty darn good... so expect to shoot low scores there. There are tough courses I go to and play for the first or second time 71-73/130-145 that I just pray to be under 90 at or maybe mid 80's. It just depends where I'm playing as to what my expectations are. If your handicap is 8, then it is 8 and you must be "living up to it"

I think shooting well is

Have some Rep points! While USGA and R&A; have different handicapping systems this rings true for golfers everywhere. I quite often play well and don't score well. Last weekend I played terribly but was one over my handicap. Anytime I shoot my handicap I'm satisfied that I played well. The odd time you can have a bad hole which makes your score higher than how you played. My target is to play within my buffer zone (anything outside and I get +0.1 on my handicap). This can be +4 to +8 so breaking 80 is a usual target for me.
