I normally loose my driver right but for some reason on this hole I found a way to draw it.

Shot #1 - Tee shot went left just inside the OB line (already aimed a little left for my fade) but I was up against a bush on my back swing.

Shot #2 - I topped the ball 1" !!!! I only had a 6" back swing.
Shot #3 - Topped it 1" again !!!!
Shot #4 - Went out across the fairway on to the cart path.
Shot #5 - Got relief from the path and hit it fat, 30 yards short of the green with a bunker in front of me.
Shot #6 - I turned a 56 degree wedge into a 6 iron and flew it over the green, through the trees and into a ditch.
Shot #7 & #8 - Had to take a penalty stroke and take a drop. I hit #8 over the trees with a 60 degree landed on the green and it rolled off.
Shot #9 - putted back onto the green
Shot #10 - 1 putted from 3' to finish.

What a mess!!!

That happens from time to time. I remember my first time at my local club, On the par 5 I think I took a 12. Shank after shank after shank.

funny you mention that, I had a 9 on a par5 yesterday. Drove OB, 4th shot flew the green into more OB, worst hole I've had in 3 years, also the first time I've thrown a club (no one was anywhere near me). Felt kinda better afterwards...

Yeah, my first time at a regulation course, I saw the par-5 distance - I think it was 480 yards - and wondered how I was supposed to cover that distance ... ever! That night, after taking a 12 myself, I realized I could cover it with four 7-irons... but when I went the next week...

Anyway, Dent's right. This happens time to time. If I feel a hole is going south, I go into damage control mode and pull out the 7-iron and just advance the ball and try to limit damage until I'm within iron range of the green. But I'm usually lying 4 somewhere bad before I even think to do this.

I had an 8 on a Par 4 on Saturday.

1 & 2) Tee shot in the left rough. Can't find ball. Drop for penalty.
3) Instead of punching out I try to draw a six iron from 170 yards. I hit it straight.
4) Punch out with a 4I that goes across the green and into the rough.
5) Hit a lob wedge onto the green that rolls into the sand.
6) Get out of sand and onto the green.
7&8) Two Putt.

I was really happy.

I get one of those holes every so often, especially if I'm cruising right along with a string of pars. It'll often happen so quickly that I don't even have a chance to even go into damage limitation. Usually where I play, that means shanking a ball into the woods, or a huge slice (or duck-hook) off the tee which goes OB or hopelessly gone in the woods.

Thing is, once I'm racking up a big number, my heart's no longer in for the hole. I just want to get out of there, since it's going to be an ESC 7 anyway. (This is a major problem I have, because bad play then spills over to the next hole, and the next, until my day's ruined.)

I know this feeling. It happens to everyone. For example, when I took this 8, for the day, I shot an 87. However, my scorecard looked like "Holy

, what happened?" I play 14 holes in +5. I was really good off the tee and managed 9 pars. However, I played 4 holes in +11. The aforementioned 8, a triple bogey, two doubles.

Those big numbers kill your game. The other day at tryouts, I was +1 after 12 and then got a 7 and then a 6, and there it goes. You think of the +'s your adding to your score.

Bye bye good game.

You are not kidding. After my 8, I said "Okay, here's the blow up hole." I go to the next hole, Par 4, dogleg left. I set up for a draw but not enough. The ball starts in the middle of the fairway and hits some trees. Falls down in the rough. Take out my six iron and punch out..threw the fairway...argh. I take my GW and leave it short. I chip and leave about 12 feet. Two putt.

Par the Par 5. Go to a Par 3. Hit it in the sand. Catch too much ball and hit it in the woods. Drop, chip, two putt. Another double. I par the next three holes. Go to another Par 4. Tee off with my 2I and catch too much ground. Goes about 100 yards. Take a 3 Iron, hit it about 200 yards, left edge of the fairway. Okay, I can make bogey. That's my thought process. 110 yards to the hole. Skull my GW and goes over the green. Chip on green. Two putt. Yet, another double. Frustrating, yes.

A couple of weeks ago I ended up hitting out of one bunker (after many tries) over the green and into another bunker… then right back into the first.

I'm usually quite comfortable with bunker shots, but for some reason these bunkers were not in such great condition and didn't seem to have any soft sand making it hard to get under the ball.

Eventually I decided to attempt a flop shot, which I actually read about on this forum (thank you sand trap) I opened the face and swung out to in as instructed… and I guess I had beginners luck because it worked beautifully and stopped dead very near the hole, but I was already +7

I ended up scoring 13 on a par 5… which is bad even for me.

Yes. 2nd day of the city tourney last year. Par 5 #6.

1 - Tee shot in the lake 35yds in front of tee box 1in 2out hitting
3 - Topped a 3w off the turf right in front of the lake. 3in 4out hitting
5 - Decide a 5i might be better then the 3w, hit nice shot to 275 from green.
6 - Try 3w off turf again. Top it again. Now 205 from green.
7 - hit an ugly 3i, low cut that rolls to 10'
8 - pitch is almost perfect, lip out and stop 8" from hole.
9 - miss 8" putt.
10 - make 2" putt

Somehow I shook off the 10 and birdied #7 pared 8 & 9 and finished the side @ +9.
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

I dont think there is a golfer out there who hasnt had one of those holes.
I had one yesterday. I took a nine on a 380 yd par 4. My drive went about 240 yards right. No real trouble yet. Punched out into the fairway. Hit my wedge thin and it screamed across the green like a bat out of hell. It ended up OB. Dropped. Chipped into the sand. Chipped out of sand. Chipped onto green. 2 putt.

It is so crazy how quickly things can spiral out of control on the course. It all came down to one thin wedge from 75 yards that cost me 5 strokes. I was mad but I have not had any real blow up holes this year so I took it in stride.

kregen we have all done it and will continue to do it.

on Tuesday I took a 9 on a Par 4 #10 after having a 44 on the front 9, that was a really nice way to start a back 9 huh?

where I played, the #10 is a huge dog leg right with the fairway only 177yds long, if you go beyond that your in the woods, they have a flag marking the middle right where you want to be so

1ST SHOT: I pull out my 6i and hit a really nice tee shot right down the left side fairway roughly 10yds left of the flag. Was only 147yds away from the green but H2O dead smack in front of the green,

2ND SHOT: so I pull my 8i out and hit it right in the back of the water short of the green ,

4TH SHOT: so I take my drop and pull out my 7i, I then hit it over the green past a bunker.....

5TH SHOT: I then use my lofted wedge attempting to get it up and proceed to hit it on the other side of the green about 75 yds away from the flag.

6TH SHOT: I used my 7i for a bump and run but the only problem is it never ran, I only got it on the green by about 3ft

7TH SHOT: putter, just trying to get it in that 4-5 ft range but left it about 8-10 ft short.

8TH SHOT: putter, short again

9TH SHOT: putter for a 3inch tap in.

a freakin 9 on a Par 4...really balloned my back 9 and wasn't able to shake that the rest of the round....took a 52 on the back for a whooping 96....., but I did a a really nice hole on the back that I replied to on the thread "Best shot of the week" and that is the reason we keep playing this great game....

I made a 10 last year on a 590 yard up hill par 5. It went like this.

Topped the tee shot into the pond that fronts the tees.
Number 3 ended up in the right rough, directly behind a tree.
4 went out sideways.
Still had 230 on my 5th and tried to make it up in one swing. Topped it.
6 came from about 200 yards out and I hit it well. Unfortunately I unded up in a greenside bunker against the face with a crazy stance.
7 stayed in the bunker.
8 onto the green.
2 putts for a 10.

Sweet.

unless you're a pro (even some pros have shot quintuple bogey on par 4's and 5's). here's how my recent worst hole went

par 4 350 dogleg left.
my natural shot is a fade so it's hard for me to draw...
you have to carry about 180 - 200 uphill before turning your ball.

1st shot
I pulled out the 5 iron and turned it lovely.... it would've been perfect IF it went 5 more yards..instead turned into a tree and came back down the hill on the left side

2nd shot
I could only play it to the right and just wanted to get up the hill.

3rd
from just about 210, nasty side hill sloping up lie with 210 uphill .
2 hybride that lands short of the green and rolls back down to the bottom

4th
with a fast green that's about 20 feet above my feet and 5 feet in front of me, I'm in a divot and tried to play a flop shot out of it. i flew the green

5th
nasty downhill chip from the fringe. i tried to tap it and let it run b/c the green has all sorts of messed up slope. that turns towards a bunker and downhill. i hit what i thought was a perfect bump...but it kept rolling and rolling and the fringe on the other side of the green

6th chip to 3 feet away from the cup

7th uphill putt that turns extreme left to right towards the end. i lipped out

8th tapped in. yeah...that hole ruined me for the rest of the day!

all b/c of 1 stupid shot that i tried to draw the ball and i'm not too comfortable doing that!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
