Just curious what your reaction is. I've seen people do everything from turning toward the yell to try and see the ball to completely hitting the deck and covering their heads.

If I'm near a tree or my cart, I'll kind of duck behind it, and if I'm out in the open I'll kind of crouch, turn my side to the ball, and try to protect my head from the direction the ball should be coming from... my usual golfing buddy tries to see the ball, which I think is just asking to take one in the nose. I've never golfed with anyone who drops everything and dives on the ground, but I've seen it... kind of funny to watch, but probably the smartest thing to do.

I actually got hit in the head the other day. It is a real tight course and I had just played a shot from the abutting fairway (to be fair the shot was only 15 yds from my fairway) I am then walking up my own fairway and I hear "FORE." My reaction is to cover my head(s?). As I am doing this I see the ball in my peripheral vision so I sneak a peak to see that it is coming right at me. At that point I am in between what to do. It hits the ground about 10 feet in front of me and bounces and hits me right above the ear. It didn't hurt and I wasn't mad, the responsible party did all they could do.

So I guess I cover my head when I hear fore.

Nothing. Im a caddy and i go and forecaddy a lot on the course. In 3 years of working there I have only been hit with a ball once. And it didnt even hurt that bad. I think if you runn around and duck you make your body a wider target for the ball. I just stand my ground and try to find the ball in the air and if I really think its comming at me then i move but the chances of the ball hitting you are slim. Same when im playing.

You betcha. If I can localize the source of the "FORE," I'll also go behind the cart or a tree if it's right there. Moving around, I was convinced by a friend, only increases the chances of getting hit.

I actually usually just stand there like a moron hoping it was not me they were yelling "FORE" to....

Usually just try to see where the ball is going, and if I can't just put my hands over my head and hope for the best.

I stop dead in my tracks, cover my head, and think to myself "If he hits me and it's a pro V, I'm taking it."

I think it's better to stop than to run, because odds are you're going to run from the whole (away from the green) and the bad shot is probably going away from the hole as well, thus chasing you. It would probably be best, actually, to run towards the closest green if you hear it... Wierd how that works huh?

Moving around, I was convinced by a friend, only increases the chances of getting hit.

Care to share your friend's logic? Because it doesn't make sense to me.

When I know a golf ball isn't going to hit someone, I don't yell anything. The last thing I want to do is yell "fore" and have them change where they're going to run into the golf ball. If it's gonna miss them, I let it. They might get a scare from the sound of a ball hitting 10 yards away, but that's better than having them run into it. I would hope others do the same thing, generally. Someone yelling "fore" means a ball is coming your way. Moving, by definition, would change the area you're in and thus reduce the likelihood of getting hit. Anyway, I either duck and cover my head (making myself as small as possible) or hide behind something if it's readily available. I don't move because, when moving, you can't easily cover your sensitive parts and you can't make yourself "small."

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
