This is what's left of my Adams Insight XTD driver. I hit about 20 balls at the range before the head launched 50 yards.

Can the shaft be reused? The pro shop said Adams would reshaft the club, but I'm not sure if I want to. The head is pretty beat up so I'm thinking about matching the shaft (Aldila DVS 55g) with a new head, if possible.

I'm not sure that one can be fiixed... sorry. The shaft broke inside the hosel so it's tough to remove it. I could be wrong though

Well, you won't be able to match that shaft exactly because that one is made specially for Adams for those clubs. The normal version would be the DVS 60, which is slightly heavier, and really nearly impossible to tell what spec differences may exist otherwise. It shares the name of the DVS, but Adams can ask for different specs to be made on the shafts for them. The normal DVS 60 is also about $200 from most shops so I don't think you would really want to go that route. The shaft that you is a little iffy on if it could be reused. You might be able to trim the tip and put it in a hybrid or a 5 wood, but it's hard to guess how much the graphite inside the tip where it broke is already weakened so I wouldn't really suggest it. I would just have it sent back to Adams.

That shaft is DOA. It can't be fixed, and once graphite shafts break, I never salvage the remains. There's no telling how far the damage extends up the shaft. It could go several inches.

Let Adams reshaft it if you like the driver. Otherwise, buy a completely new club from them or someone else.

Putting a new shaft in that head won't be hard at all. A good clubmaker can fix that club in no time flat.

Is Adams going to reshaft it under warranty? I am not kidding when I say this just happened to my Adams driver. Same exact club. Mine did not snap at the range, but from bouncing around in the trunk. However, it broke at the exact same spot as yours..........

If you have the head reshafted make sure that the installer removes the sharp edge on the inside of the hosel. otherwise the replacement shaft will also eventually break

I'll call Adams tomorrow and see how they handle this. Maybe this is why the driver only costs $169. Did you have the stiff flex also?

Yeah, same exact club. A3 with 55-S shaft. My break looks almost identical to yours. I found someone else on another forum saying his a3 broke while leaning on it when teeing up a ball. I am having some quality concerns......

From an amateur clubmaker's standpoint (built all my own stuff), I would lean to believing you're correct about a quality control issue. That many failures with the same club, IMO, points to a bad batch at Aldila. Given that Aldila is typically a very reputable company, I'm thinking they've either got it fixed now or don't know they had/have a problem with that particular shaft.

The other explanation is that whoever assembled the club didn't de-burr the inside of the hosel before assembly. If they didn't, it could cause separation in the graphite inside the hosel which in turn can weaken the shaft even above hosel level. Either way, it's just about impossible at this point for a clubmaker to fix that club without de-burring it, because he/she is going to have to remove the broken tip plus all the epoxy and in the process, will have to smooth up the hosel. I might be inclined to drop Aldila an email about their shaft, too, just in case. Summary: If you fix it this time, you probably won't have to fix it again. Even if it is/was a QC problem with the shaft, I would think that would be fixed by now. I will say this, however: I just ordered a Snake Eyes Mamba 2 driver kit from Golfsmith and the box showed up with shipping damage. When I unpacked everything, I found my Aldila Vse 60 shaft broken in two pieces. It might be that Aldila shafts in general don't take a beating very well nowadays, but I'm betting that's not it. Jess

happened with my driver, the shaft snapped and the head went flying 50 meters. I Went back to Decathlon since the set has a 2 year warranty and they replaced not just the driver, but the whole set. Very nice of them.

So keep those warranty papers and receipts!

Good luck.

If you haven't had it very long, either call up Adams, or go back to the shop you got it from and have them reshaft it. If it was normal use like you say it was, then there should be no problem getting them to reshaft it.

Oh and that shaft is done for. You wouldn't really want to put it into a fairway wood or hybrid. Even if you could reuse it, the tip stiffness of the shaft would be way off.

I had that happen to my driver head several years ago. I just took the shaft and stuck it in my 3 wood. That thing tested out at a X-stiff after that. I didn't need that flex for my swing speed, but I liked the solid feel over the regular flex stock shaft that I did have. I switched to a X-stiff shaft for the Driver so they would match up well together. I got really good with this Driver/3 Wood combo, but they were showing some age after 4 years in the bag and I replaced them last month. The old pair was Taylormade R580 Driver and 3 wood with Graffalloy Blue Shafts and the same grips, so they looked like big and little brother. I probably wouldn't go that route again, though. I suggest you don't re-use the old shaft. Keep it around though as it can make a great alignment aid to keep in your bag that is very light weight.

That sounds about right. Our rep has been fairly accomodating with us on those types of things.
