He's a friend of yours, he claims to be much better than he is. Sure he can pure one 275-290 on occasion, but he never re tee's hitting 3 when he goes off the course. He always finds his balls even if they are in a bush or plant. He seems to always get 6's when you get 8's and pars holes that he goes OB on. He is always mad when he shoots in the 80's and claims to have shot 80's from the tips at Hilton Head last week. Although when he plays with you he shoots a 90+ and thats questionable.

Replace the 90+ with 100+ and I play with him as little as I can get away with. (about twice a month)

Nope.... don't know him. Most of my golf is actually played with guys who play by the rules like I do. I don't play with anyone who deliberately cheats. I do play with a few guys who will occasionally bend a rule in the interest of keeping up the pace of play, as in an unexpected lost ball off the tee they will drop in the rough and be hitting their 4th shot. That's about as serious a rules violation as I see among the guys I play with regularly.

If a stranger wants to to cheat himself, have at it. I get paired with people at random all the time when I get to the course as a single. I really don t care if they play by the rules or not... it's not my problem.

This is interesting.

I was called this guy by one of my golf buddies.

I went through a rough stretch about 3 years ago, struggling with shanks.

Prior to the shanks I was down at 4.5 hdcp.

Then I got a new job , got the shanks, met this guy and started playing golf with him.

I couldn't break 80 or even 85 for the whole summer. The guy had so many comments when I told him I was a 4.5 the prior year.

Anyway, the next year, I was able to shake the shanks and I played in a tournament with him on his home course. I shot 73 and took the low gross. Shut his ass up. :p

Yeah, I know him. I don't play with him anymore, though. That's because I don't play with (or respect) cheaters. They can go play with themselves. So to speak.

I know plenty of guys like this and it doesn't bother me in the least. I don't play for money and don't care what my playing partners shoot. If they are having fun then I could care less if they cheat on every shot. They don't affect me. I will point out rules and let them know what is OK, but whether or not they play that way is up to them. Sometimes the rules are cumbersome for casual golfers anyway (hitting from bad lies or taking strokes for hitting OB isn't fun for them, not to mention some of the rules that just don't make sense to them). A couple of them play by the Sorta Golf Rules ( http://sortagolf.manilasites.com/revised7 ) because it's more fun.

The guys I play with aren't quite as you describe, though. I always have to laugh at the "7 handicap" who can't break 90 (and sometimes can't break 100). I find it easier just to go with it and let him tell his stories while I play my boring, consistent game. The only time this guy bothers me is if he is an angry golfer (cursing and throwing clubs, etc.) That's the one guy I do not like to play with.

Almost along the same lines is a guy I play with occasionally. When I met him 4 years ago he was a horrible golfer who couldn't break 110 but adamently plays by the rules (always have to respect that....) Being the son of a PGA teaching pro, the mentor side of me came out and I worked with him quite a bit and gave him lots of tips. He started playing in an amateur tour in town (as about a 20 handicap) and has won several events and is always telling me how much I've helped his game and how grateful he is. Funny thing is, everytime I play with him he shoots over 100. I don't doubt he plays better than that most of the time, but he just can't play with me for some reason.

I think everyone knows at least one of these guys and alot of us whether we admit it or not used to be that guy. When you first start playing its easy to take a mulligan or two, say that balls almost inbounds, move your ball around alittle to improve your lie. I did,but then I played more and now I understand that I'm only cheating myself. And when my son started playing I told him that no one would say anything if he fibbed on his score but if he did he would be cheating only himself,so no matter how bad it is he always writes down his correct score, but when he does get a good score he's proud that he did it without cheating. And that makes me proud.

Over a life time of golf, I've seen some very skilled cheaters. I keep expecting to see an article in Golf Digest sharing the many techniques of the "foot wedgie." There is the distraction foot wedgie, such as when the guy points across the fairway and says, "is that Angelina Jolie?" while toe flipping his ball from behind a tree. There is the "Oh, it is right there on the other side of the ravine, must have hit a rock." There is the "yes, that is my ladies pink ball, didn't you see me tee off with it?" And, point of entry to a hazard specialists... we all know the guy, his ball never gets over dry land, but he drops parallel to the splash in the fairway claiming club lengths too long for Paul Bunyan. While there is no rule against marking a ball on the green in front of the ball (as long as you do not improve the line,) there is a problem with replacing such a marked ball in front of the marker. The ooch-flipper is another great marking technique. A good ooch-flipper can make up a few yards closer to the hole over the course of 18 holes. And finally, there are the guys who tamp down anything on the green, claiming it was a ball mark -- even when clearly some careless person ahead of us planted their heel and twisted, hoping a putt would drop -- leaving a patch of spike marks even with plastic spikes. And tee markers -- are they not something to mark the general area of a circle from which one tees off? Argh.

We all know these guys -- I don't choose to play with them, but sometimes you get stuck.

You know what guy pisses me off? The one who blames everything but himself for his bad shots. He's usually is the same one as the chap this topic is about. Today I played with one such example and he hit his approach over the green, which was of course wasn't his fault because he only hit a 3/4 pitching wedge and it shouldn't have gone that far. It just not fair that 90 metres is a bad distance for him and he doesn't have a gap wedge. He even went as far as to tell me that I should be offering my condolences that he had such bad luck!

The same guy was putting once and there were some people talking in the parking lot about 40 metres away. They were talking before he lined his putt up, while he lined his putt up, while he took his practice swings and while he hit the putt and as soon as it missed he turned round with a disgusted look on his face as if it was their fault he missed. And don't even get me started on the excuses he comes up with when he hits a ball off the fairway and his lie isn't perfect.

While I don't follow every rule in golf to the letter, I do try to keep it honest. I have played with a lot of people that will hit the exact same shots as me and some how always be one shot lower. I played with a guy that did this, and I started counting his shots. He wasn't counting the original tee shot. Just look back and start counting from his second shot. I just laughed and walked on. The one thing I have absolutly no problem with is people using the foot wedge out of the rocks. Being in the desert it happens a lot and no sense in ruining your clubs when your trying to learn.

I used to be one of those sortagolfer guys but as I have been getting better I play honestly now because I want to know what my real score is. (it gets kind of sad though). I have never tracked my scores, just toss the cards in the bag when I'm done and throw them away when I clean it out. I will have to start keeping them and find out what my handicap is.

I play with a guy who will leave a putt short, or push it, or run it long, and always look at me and ask "Are you gonna give me that?" I always say "Sure!" no matter the distance. What do I care? He's a doof for asking, I don't mind obliging. ANYthing to move the game along!

Well, here's the kicker: He didn't mean he wanted a 'gimmie' for the next shot, he wanted to to card the score for the hole as if he MADE the first putt! HAH! I noticed that when he was claiming 10+ shots under what he really played. I had to laugh over that one. I let him do whatever he wants without comment because, to me, he's not playing golf . Doesn't bother me though - it's even entertaining.
